Portmanteaus and Portkeys

Wizards Unite Portkeys

A Portmanteau in Wizards Unite is a special item that needs to be “walked” in order to unlock – very similar to Pokémon GO eggs. Portmanteaus come in three flavors, depending on the distance required to unlock – 2 KM, 5 KM and 10 KM. Opening Portmanteaus rewards an AR encounter via a Portkey.

In order to unlock a Portmanteau you need a key. There are two types of Keys in Wizards Unite:

  • Golden Key – can be used infinitely, doesn’t break after use, similar to unlimited Incubator in Pokemon GO. The Golden Key opens locked Portkey Portmanteaus and it can be used repeatedly.
  • Silver Key – purchasable store item, can not be used repeatedly but allows players to unlock multiple Portmanteaus at the same time. You can get Silver Keys as Level Up rewards, by returning Foundables, or by purchasing them in Diagon Alley.

Players can have 8 Portmanteaus at one time. You can’t tell what type of Portmanteau you’re looting form the overworld map – they all look the same, so the only way to figure out what it is is to loot it (1). Unlocking a Portmanteau will give you a Portkey that can be used to start an AR encounter.

Note: The game must be open for the distance traveled to apply towards unlocking a Portkey Portmanteau.

Portkeys

Once you unlock a Portmanteau, the game will reward you with a Portkey. Using the Portkey will transfer you to an AR encounter where you are required to find 5 Wrackspurts. Tapping on a Wrackspurt will give you Ministry rewards, such as Wizarding XP, Registry family XP, or potion ingredients. In addition, you also get Fragments of Foundables to complete your Registry.

Finding the same Wrackspurt more than once activates a bonus. Once you find all the Wrackspurts, you’ll return back to your original location on the Map. Activated Portkeys can be accessed once.

You are unable to return to the Portkey area if you leave before finding 5 Wrackspurts.

Tips & Tricks

  • If you get a 5 KM or 10 KM Portmanteau, use a Silver Key on it. Saving the Gold Key for the 2 KM ones will get the most value from it.
  • You can not delete Portmanteaus, so cycling through 2 KM ones is very important. If you don’t cycle through 2 KM Portmanteaus, your slots will eventually get filled with them and you will miss out on rare Portmanteaus.
  • You can’t pick up more while your Portmanteaus slots are full.
  • In order to maximize the Experience gained from Portmanteaus is to wait to have 5 completed Portmanteaus, use a Baruffio’s Brain Elixir and open them all. Portkeys with double XP buff provide a large amount of XP.

(1) When the game originally launched as a Beta in New Zealand, different Portmanteaus appeared as different sprites on the map. Around April 23rd 2019 players have reported that all Portmanteaus look the same on the overworld map.

Does having the app open, but your phone locked, still count for distance? Open and in the background? Or does the app need to be open, focused, and also have the screen on?

Distance is complex and no one seems to know the actual algorithm the game uses. But in general, it does seem you have to have the game open. And I think, but this is not confirmed, you must interact with items in the game. I think distance might be calculated on the server-side, not by your phone. So you need to interact with items in the game to let the server know where you have been, such as picking up ingredients on the ground, returning a foundable, visiting an INN, etc. Niantic has said they will later make use of… Read more »

I can’t really use the portkeys – they cannot be found on the ground and when I finally do find them and go inside I am kicked out after few seconds although I am not moving my body at all. Do you have some advices?

Make sure the AR+ feature under the settings is turned off. That might be causing you to fall out of the portkey. See my other note here for more details.

Dont open your Portkey while u have wifi on, if the connection to the wifi is a little unstable your might loose your portkey, if you have entered the portal, because you will drift away.

You never “lose” your portkey without getting credit for it. If you have not yet clicked on the first Wrackspurt then the key is returned to your inventory. If you have clicked on at least one WS, then you get full credit for all 5 even if you exit by mistake or by something like a network error. The server assigns random credit for all 5 Wrackspurt even if you didn’t click on some (the entire system seems to be random luck). It will not show you a reward summary screen, but your assets will be updated. That seems to… Read more »

How long do we have in a port? Mine seem to end within 5 seconds or so.

I’ve never seen a timer on it. If you have AR+ turned on in your settings you can fall out by accident. If that happens to you a lot, turn AR+ off, and try again. That will force you to be locked into a fixed location in the ce3nter of the room — you can twist the phone to look all around, but you can’t move around in the room or fall out by accident. You should have unlimited time to look around in that case.

If you drop out of a port key by accident, it might be because you are using the AR+ mode. This option is found in the settings under the camera. With AR+ (Augmented Reality — fancier version), you can not only twist around to look at the room, but you can also move up and down, and back and forth to explore the room. But if you go too far, you fall out of the room. Don’t fear, however, if you have not clicked on any of the Wrackspurts, you don’t lose your port key. It’s still in your list.… Read more »
