EE Partners with Niantic as Exclusive Partner in the UK

On May 22, 2019, EE announced its plan to roll out 5G services in the United Kingdom. EE also shared its partnership with Niantic to promote Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.

First 5G Network in the United Kingdom

On May 30, 2019, EE will start offering 5G services in six cities in the UK.

  • London
  • Birmingham
  • Cardiff
  • Manchester
  • Edinburgh
  • Belfast

More cities will gain coverage later this year, with an even longer list to receive 5G in 2020.

In addition to upgrading multiple sites to 5G, EE is also expanding 4G coverage into rural areas.

Marc Allera, CEO of BT’s Consumer division, said

“We’re adding 5G to the UK’s number one 4G network to increase reliability, increase speeds, and keep our customers connected where they need it most. 5G will create new experiences with augmented reality, make our customers’ lives easier, and help launch entirely new businesses that we haven’t even imagined. We’re upgrading more than 100 sites to 5G every month from today to connect more places to what 5G can enable.

Our partnerships with Google and Niantic are just the start of our commitment to work with the most innovative and exciting companies in the world to ensure that EE customers are the first to benefit from the exciting new experiences that 5G will bring.”

Exclusive Wizards Unite Content

EE announced that they will be the exclusive telecom launch partner in the UK for Wizards Unite. EE customers will have access to exclusive Wizards Unite content. In addition, EE locations will appear in the game as sponsored Inns and Fortresses with higher reward payout and special quests. Details will be announced at launch.

Going forward, EE and Niantic will work together to ensure the best in-game experiences on 5G in the future.

Speculation on Exclusive 5G Features

This is not the first partnership between Wizards Unite and a telecom company offering 5G services. SK Telecom is Niantic’s official partner in South Korea.

In my previous article covering 5G features in Wizards Unite, I talked about the possibility of optional game features utilizing 5G capability. Some of Niantic’s visions for augmented reality just aren’t possible on LTE.
