The Ancient Norwegian Ridgeback in Wizards Unite

The Ancient Norwegian Ridgeback is the seventh Adversary in the Challenges Registry of Feared Adversaries. This dragon is the same species as Hagrid’s beloved Norbert (later Norberta) from the Harry Potter series.

You will need to place one Adversary and four Artefacts to prestige the Ancient Norwegian Ridgeback Registry page:

  • The Ancient Norwegian Ridgeback
  • The Norwegian Ridgeback Egg
  • Norbert’s Singed Teddy Bear
  • The Norwegian Ridgeback Spine
  • Dragon Breeding for Pleasure and Profit

To earn the Ancient Norwegian Ridgeback Fragments and Artefact Fragments, you need to defeat the enemies in the chain, including the Guards and the Ridgeback:

  • Common Troll
  • Three-Headed Dog
  • Ancient Norwegian Ridgeback

For each Guard you defeat, you earn one Artefact Fragment. When you defeat the Ancient Norwegian Ridgeback, you earn one Ancient Norwegian Ridgeback Fragment and one Artefact Fragment.

Foe Stamina Possible Artefact Fragments
Common Troll 807 The Norwegian Ridgeback Egg OR The Norwegian Ridgeback Spine OR Dragon Breeding for Pleasure and Profit
Three-Headed Dog 1576 The Norwegian Ridgeback Egg OR The Norwegian Ridgeback Spine OR Norbert’s Singed Teddy Bear
Ancient Norwegian Ridgeback 2587 Ancient Norwegian Ridgeback (guaranteed) AND one Artefact Fragment

How to Defeat The Ancient Norwegian Ridgeback in Wizards Unite

To defeat any Adversary, players need a combination of Spell Energy, Potions, and time. The more nodes you complete in your Profession’s Lesson Plan and Advanced Adversarial Combat, the fewer resources you will need to defeat Adversaries.

If you have completed the Auror Lesson Plan, you should consider playing as an Auror to defeat the Ancient Norwegian Ridgeback. You will save Spell Energy and Potions. Otherwise, you should play as the Profession that you have built up the most.

That said, you will not know the type of Adversary until you enter the Adversary Encounter. Once you start the Adversary Encounter, there is not a secure way to change your Profession. Some players have successfully used a second device to change Professions, but this can cause a glitch that kicks you out of the Adversary Encounter, so do this at your own risk.

Damage Dealt by the Ancient Norwegian Ridgeback and Guards

When going through the Ancient Norwegian Ridgeback Adversary chain, you take damage whenever the Foe hits you. This chart shows how much damage you take, depending on your Profession. The chart assumes that you have completed the Profession Lesson Plan.

Foe Professor Magizoologist Auror >50% Auror <50%
Common Troll 15 12 16 15
Three-Headed Dog 31 22 44 39
Ancient Norwegian Ridgeback 62 50 55 55

Resources Needed to Defeat the Ancient Norwegian Ridgeback

These recommendations assume that players have completed ten out of fifteen nodes in Advanced Adversarial Combat. If you have not done this, you will use more resources. The chart also assumes that Potion strength and maximum number of charges have been fully upgraded in the SOS skill tree. Plotter101 put together the following chart to help players prioritize their resources when completing the Ancient Norwegian Ridgeback Adversary chain.

If you are using a screen reader, the following text explains this chart about the Ancient Norwegian Ridgeback chain.

Aurors will need to (1) use four Spell Energy and zero Potions when fighting the Common Troll, (2) use eight Spell Energy and one Healing Potion when fighting the Three-Headed Dog if they have bad RNG, and (3) use four Spell Energy when fighting the Ridgeback by combining one Strong Exstimulo Potion with a Wit-Sharpening Potion OR by using one Potent Exstimulo Potion.

Magizoologists will need to (1) use five Spell Energy and zero Potions when fighting the Common Troll, (2) use seven Spell Energy and zero Potions when fighting the Three-Headed Dog, and (3) use nine Spell Energy when fighting the Ridgeback by combining one Strong Exstimulo Potion with a Wit-Sharpening Potion OR use six Spell Energy by using one Potent Exstimulo Potion.

Professors will need to (1) use three Spell Energy and zero Potions when fighting the Common Troll, (2) use thirteen Spell Energy and zero Potions when fighting the Three-Headed Dog, and (3) use twelve Spell Energy when fighting the Ridgeback by combining one Strong Exstimulo Potion with a Wit-Sharpening Potion OR use eight Spell Energy by using one Potent Exstimulo Potion.

Note that Plotter101 recommends you always keep some Healing Potions on hand in case you take more hits than anticipated.

I battle Adversaries as a Magizoologist with fifteen out of fifteen nodes completed in Advanced Adversarial Combat. I typically do not use any Potions against the first two Foes in a chain. I sometimes use one Wit-Sharpening Potion or Strong Exstimulo Potion against the second Foe if I am in a hurry. When I fight the Ridgeback, I plan to use one Strong Exstimulo Potion combined with one Wit-Sharpening Potion. I have plenty of Healing Potions if necessary.

How to Defeat the Three-Headed Dog by Profession

We will need to contend with the Three-Headed Dog, the second Foe in the chain, before battling the Ancient Norwegian Ridgeback. Plotter101 put together the chart below to show the different combinations of resources (Spell Energy, Potions, and time) necessary to defeat the Three-Headed Dog.

These recommendations assume that players have completed ten out of fifteen nodes in Advanced Adversarial Combat. If you have not done this, you will use more resources. The chart also assumes that Potion strength and maximum number of charges have been fully upgraded in the SOS skill tree.

If you are using a screen-reader, the following text explains this chart about the Three-Headed Dog.

How to Defeat the Three-Headed Dog as an Auror

How to Defeat the Ancient Norwegian Ridgeback by Profession

These charts will assume that players have completed ten out of fifteen nodes in Advanced Adversarial Combat and have fully upgraded their Potion strength and maximum number of charges in the SOS skill tree. If you have not done one or both of these, you can calculate whether you need Potions by using this spreadsheet with data compiled by Plotter101 and his Discord. You will need to make a copy in your own Google Drive in order to update the player stats on the summary page.

The average time to defeat the Ridgeback will be 46.4 seconds. Using this strategy, the player will win 95.7 percent of the time. This is a good strategy if you do not have many Potent Exstimulo Potions.

If an Auror uses one Potent Exstimulo Potion combined with one Wit-Sharpening Potion to boost their offensive power, they will use at least four Spell Energy and should not need Healing Potions. The average time to defeat the Ridgeback will be 29.3 seconds. Using this strategy, the player will win 99.3 percent of the time. This is the recommended strategy to conserve resources.

Tip on Aiming at the Ancient Norwegian Ridgeback

The Ridgeback is arguably the hardest Adversary to hit because its target (circle) moves around so much. Once you know the trick, however, it is much easier to hit every time. The circle moves in a triangle pattern. First, it moves to the right, then down and to the left, and then upward and to the left. See the tweeted image below from Plotter101 for an illustration of this.

Final Thoughts on the Adversary

The Ancient Norwegian Ridgeback can be tough to beat. If you’re a newer or casual player, you might need to work your way up to defeating it. You can start collecting Artefact Fragments by defeating the Guards. Then you can back out from the Adversary Encounter to save on Potions and Spell Energy.

It is important to prioritize finishing one Profession’s Lesson Plan. All Professions have strengths and weaknesses, so consider your overall game strategy as a player, beyond Adversaries alone.

What do you think about the Ancient Norwegian Ridgeback? What other advice would you offer players of different levels?

Note that it is impossible to defeat the 3 headed dog in 4 hits as an Auror when using a basic exstimulo potion. It does slightly less damage than the wit sharpening potion (+75% vs +80%) and the dog is left with 6 stamina after 4 consecutive critical hits.

“ The chart also assumes that Potion strength and maximum number of charges have been fully upgraded in the SOS skill tree.”

The problem I see with this, is a good deal of people have not done this yet. I’ve only recently started focusing on the potion SOS lessons. I’ve maxed out the generic and family strength SOS lessons to help with brilliant events and slack time. The other problem is you need quite a few DADA books to finish the potion SOS lessons.
