Harry Potter: Wizards Unite has another Brilliant Event for us! It’s time to prepare for the second week of the Christmas Calamity Brilliant Event!
Below is a complete guide for the event, as well as a few tips and tricks you can use to get through the event faster than a Quidditch player on a Firebolt!
Into videos? Here’s my overview of this guide with some bonus commentary!

Brilliant Event Tasks
As usual, these tasks all come straight from Fazes, so they should be accurate, unless the HPWU developers make last-minute changes!
Like the previous Brilliant Events, the quest line is split into four sections. You have to complete each section before progressing to the next one. Once you finish the regular quests, you can move onto the Bonus Assignment.
Brilliant Portkeys will go to the Three Broomsticks! While you’re stopping in for a few, make sure to have a butterbeer and warm up by the fire. Madam Rosmerta might also have a delicious mead for those of age! Aging Potions won’t work, Mr. and Mr. Weasley…
Christmas Calamity Quest 1/4
Much like the Yule Ball invitations from the first week of this Brilliant Event, Baubles will be dropping as rewards when visiting Inns. They may or may not be guaranteed, so there is a good chance you will need to visit more Inns than the minimum requirement.
Collect 5 Baubles from Inns | 2 Restricted Section Books |
Complete 10 Traces | 10 Brilliant Family XP |
Collect 5 Gifts | 20 Brilliant Family XP |
1st Quest Rewards
- 500 Wizarding XP
- 1 Restricted Section book
- Chilled Pumpkin Juice Brilliant Registry Sticker
- 1 Silver Key (!!!)
- 20 Brilliant Family XP
Christmas Calamity Quest 2/4
Here’s a cool twist on collecting Baubles! Instead of using a Registry Exploration Family (like releasing Foundables from Gnome Confoundables like in the first week of this event) using Ebublio will reward you with the Baubles you need to keep dancing through the Christmas Calamity.
In regards to Portkeys, I plan on stocking up with extra Community Day Portkeys since they’ll be rewarding rare Foundables and only have a 1km requirement. Opening loads of Portkeys can be time consuming and really slow down progress in the quest, so strategic planning is the way to go!
Collect 5 Baubles by casting Ebublio | 15 Brilliant Family XP |
Open 4 Portkeys | 300 Wizarding XP |
Send 5 Gifts | 20 Brilliant Family XP |
2nd Quest Rewards
- 25 Brilliant Family XP
- 3 Restricted Section Books
- Yule Ball Christmas Trees Portrait Frame
- Christmas Cracker Brilliant Registry Sticker
- 1 Strong Exstimulo Potion
Christmas Calamity Quest 3/4
The Brilliant Foundables themselves often range from Medium to Severe, so there’s a good chance you’ll be able to release 5 High Threats fairly quickly. If you’re having trouble finding them, drop a few Dark Detectors in an Inn and watch the spawns come! Since you have to use 2 Dark Detectors anyway, it’s a win/win! (Dark Detectors are actually good now I promise!)
Brew 5 Potions | 500 Wizarding XP |
Return 5 High-Threat Foundables | 500 Wizarding XP |
Use 2 Dark Detectors | 15 Brilliant Family XP |
3rd Quest Rewards
- 25 Brilliant Family XP
- 3 Restricted Section Books
- Metallic Violins Animated Portrait Sticker
- Ice Sculpture Portrait Sticker
- 3 Unicorn Hair Ingredients
Christmas Calamity Quest 4/4
Seven Potions?! SEVEN. I don’t particularly like time-gating mechanics but fortunately there is a #prostrat you can use to get through this before the event starts! Details about that are below in the tips and tricks section.
Collect 15 Baubles by casting Ebublio | 25 Brilliant Family XP |
Brew 7 Potions | 750 Wizarding XP |
Collect 20 Fragments | 25 Brilliant Family XP |
4th Quest Rewards
- Winter Ice Arches Portrait Frame
- 50 Gold
- 6 Restricted Section Books
- Snowy Christmas Tree Brilliant Registry Sticker
- 2 Spell Books
Christmas Calamity BONUS Assignment!
If you complete the Brilliant Event quests early, then you unlock the Bonus Assignment.
To find High-Threat Foundables, stack 3 Dark Detectors on a single Inn, preferably a sponsored Inn. Also use a Tonic for Trace Detection Potion. You can also look for Oddities at Dusk or Dawn. Vampires, Werewolves, and Erklings are all High-Threat Foundables.
Brilliant Foundables will also count as High Foundables for this task.
Collect 30 Baubles from Brilliant Traces | 3 Red Spell Books |
Defeat 30 Fortress Foes | Bonus Assignment badge |
Send 10 Gifts | Yule Ball Fancy Hat Style 2 Portrait Lens |
Bonus Rewards
- 2000 Wizarding XP
- 100 Brilliant Family XP
Brilliant Foundables and Where to Find Them
Just like previous Brilliant Events, you will only be able to encounter some of these Brilliant Foundables in the wild. The others can be found through Fortress Challenges, special 3k Portkeys, and event tasks.

Tips to Complete the Brilliant Event
- If you choose to use the Community Day Portkeys that drop Care of Magical Creatures Foundables (like I plan to do) then you won’t be rushed to walk 15km in total to get all 5 of the Silver Gargoyle Foundable. Brilliant Portkeys will glow purple on the Map. Do not pick up any more than you need!
- To brew Potions quickly, you can brew them in advance. Since you have to brew 12 total Potions this time around, I recommend using a rental cauldron if you have the extra Gold! For example, a day before the event I’ll brew 4 Exstimulo Potions in the regular cauldron THEN I’ll rent a cauldron and brew 4 more!
- If you’ve having trouble finding Brilliant Traces, avoid flagged areas. They are less likely to spawn in those areas.
- If you need to complete the event quickly, or you only have a short time to work on it, visit a sponsored Simon Mall if at all possible. Inns, Fortresses, and spawns are all plentiful.
- Save your Scrolls and your Restricted Section Books until the end of the event. Then use our guide to spend them wisely!
- When working on the Bonus Assignment, running through Ruins Chamber I will likely get monotonous. Try going through Tower Chambers I, II, or III to get those rare Fortress Foundables! They aren’t guaranteed, but have a much higher chance of dropping from those particular Fortress Chambers!

P.S. Need a new external battery pack to get you through another week of playing Wizards Unite? Brita has written a guide of top-rated power banks over on my own blog!
Has anyone found out how early is “too late” for the bonus task? This 7-potion bottleneck sounds so desperate that it borders on distasteful. :-/
I guess five minutes before the event ends is still good, 1 second after it ends is too late? You can keep working on the bonus task after the event ends. I will probably have brewed those 12 potions on the second day. Even if you brew 12 in a row, it will never take more than 24 hours, so you should have ample time. No sweat. One day before you simply start brewing 4, and you don’t collect them. You can’t speed them up, which is annoying, but so be it. I will have 6 queued up, even before… Read more »
Seriously? You know that or you guess that? “If you complete the Brilliant Event quests early, then you unlock the Bonus Assignment.” “5 minutes before the end” does not meet the conditions for “early” in my book, that’s why I’m wondering. Maybe Animagus simply shouldn’t use the word in his text? Can’t recall if there exist in-game hints about that, gonna pay attention now. I’d usually do all the tasks, including the bonus, in two to three days. I don’t think I’m gonna rent the cauldron – this time I’ll just try to have 4 potions ready at the moment… Read more »
Thanks to my lack of friends that send/receive gifts, I actually didn’t complete the bonus task last week. I am pretty confident that there’s no completing tasks after the event ends.
Technically, completing the tasks one second before the event ends is still “early.” I think your actual question is: How early is early enough? That answer just depends on your friends and whether you want to rent a cauldron. If I rented a cauldron and had enough friends that give/receive gifts, there’s no reason not to have this entire event completed in 7 hours, right?
Hi there! And thanks.
And no, I was really concerned with “how early is ‘too late'”, because I apparently got fixated too much on one interpretation of that quoted sentence by Animagus. I truly thought there was some point in the event, after which it was too late to qualify for the bonus task. So in the most recent events, I would make sure to glide very quickly through the regular quests. But now I’m getting the message, finally. Thanks, discgolfer and Jo!
The bonus task awards three red books for completing the first part, 30 baubles from brilliant traces.
Good point! But in the meantime, it’s turned out that no investments are going to be necessary, because there is no need to hurry with the quests at all. Better than I thought 🙂
With the last round (due to wedding being less than a week away taking up 90% of my time) I opened the bonus assignment with 3 hours to go. I picked the task in it that I wanted the reward from and just completed that because there was no time to do all of them, but it did still open and I did manage to get that task done.
Animagus! Matt! As usual, awesome information!!! I always enjoy the HUB information and guides for these events, very detailed and descriptive!! Potions not even a problem!! If one doesn’t even want to rent a cauldron, you can still brew common exstimullo potion in less than two hours…. so anyone complains about that, please it’s just complaining to complain….. LOVE these events, and all the tasks, easy or challenging, for this of us having fun, that’s what it’s all about!! Thanks ANIMAGUS!!!

Tip to consider: if you like to speed through the quests, make sure you keep a few gifts from Monday unopened, especially those coming from people in your time zone, or, better, the zones to the west of you. This is because of a negative loop across the quests: you are first expected to collect, then to send. So for those of us who prefer to keep their friend lists small, this might mean that our friends will delay sending their gifts, waiting for Quest 2. And you are going to get stuck at Quest 1, waiting to receive the… Read more »
I read “collecting” as picking up gifts from Inns, Greenhouses, or Towers. I suppose we’ll figure it out for sure when we get there.
It makes more sense, too. I hope you’re right! 🙂
I hope it’s gifts from inns… because after 2pm started, I went and opened the gifts I’d saved from friends… and none registered. I even did some traces first to make sure the game was ‘registering’ my actions first.
For “open portkeys” – does that work if you have put the key in before this phase of the challenge? Or do you have to put the key in and walk it off till unlocked after the challenge is active?
The former. It opens after you’ve walked the relevant distance. So if you have a 5km one, it should be safe to put the key in right now, or to have put it in a while ago. With a 2km, it depends on how you plan to play the first quest.
how do you pick up 5 gifts? I have opened 5 that were given to me.
Try inns, greenhouses, fortresses. It’s what Todd suggested above — not about receiving gifts from friends but rather getting gift drops from inns, etc.
How do you pick up 5 gifts in part 1? I opened gifts, and nothing happened.
Help – need to send some gifts. 3173 2265 1204 happy holidays!
Mission accomplished. This is great. Thank u all! On the other hand – Bonus task will require to send even more gifts. Further Invitations appreciated, though 🙂
I noticed this event is only 6 days rather than the usual 7. Any idea why?
Apparently, it’s an error (shocking, eh? :-)) that they are going to correct “in the next release”. The event is going to be 7 days long, as announced.
How do I get 5 gifts
You need to pick them up from inns, greenhouses, or with challenges, just hit up every one you pass when you are out, then use those for the next part.
I need friends to send gifts to. 8300 2685 4688
You should have an invite from toddashi now.
Has anyone had any issues where there are no gift drops? I filled up my energy from inns and greenhouses and no gifts. When energy was full I still tried the inns and greenhouses and nothing. I was even at a Simon Mall today as well.
It seems that if you already have too many gifts (max), you need to send some to make room for more. Then the Inns, Greenhouses, and Challenges will drop one for you.
I tried that and still nothing.
Gifts are not guaranteed, they don’t always drop. Plus, see if you are at 30/30 and if so, then delete the cr.p from among them (ingredients and spell energy), and get some more.
I was maxed on the gifts that I picked up and needed to send some to have room to pick up more. Thank you for your help.
It finally worked. Thank you for your help.
Need some friends… 7184 1056 7389
Thank you…
