Creatures classified as XXXX by the Ministry of Magic are those which are dangerous and require specialist knowledge but might be handled by skilled wizards.
Centaurs have human head, torso and arms attached to a horse body which can be any color the equine breeds exhibit. They were classified as beasts at their own request, despite being intelligent creatures. They are classified as XXXX not because they are unduly aggressive, but because they must be treated with great respect.
The centaur is forest-dwelling. It is believed they originated in Greece, even though there are centaur communities in many European countries nowadays. Areas where they can’t be disturbed by muggles have been established in all of them by their respective magical authorities. However, they don’t really need wizards’ protection; they have their own means to hide from humans.
The centaurs world is mysterious to us. Generally, they distrust both wizards and muggles; they don’t find us actually different from each other. They live in herds from ten to fifty members. They have a reputation for being learned in magical healing, divination, archery and astronomy.
The demiguise can be found in the Far East. It is able to become invisible when it feels threatened, but skilled wizards and witches might sight it.
Herbivore and peaceful, it is something like a graceful ape in appearance, with doleful, big, black eyes, often hidden under its hair. All his body is covered with long, fine, silky, silvery hair. Its skin is highly valued, as invisibility cloaks can be made with its hair (but these would become dull over time).
The demiguise is able to discern the most probable immediate future.
Elfish creature originated in the Black Forest (Germany). They are bigger than a gnome (three feet high on average) and have a pointy face. They will try to lure children away from their guardians, as these are seduced by its high-pitched cackle. However, the German Ministry of Magic has been carrying out strict controls over the last few centuries, which have dramatically decreased the number of Erkling killings.
These creatures can speak human language.
Large, powerful, grey beast from Africa. Weighing up to a tone, it may be mistaken for a rhinoceros at a distance. It has a thick hide, which repels most charms and curses, a large, sharp horn upon its nose and a long rope-like tail. They give birth to one calf at a time.
This beast doesn’t attack unless excessively provoked, but it tends to turn out catastrophically when it does. His horn can pierce any material, even metal, and contains a fluid which will cause whatever is injected with it to explode.
Erumpent numbers are not great, as it is frequent that, during mating season, males explode each other. African wizards and witches treat them with great caution. The horn, tail and explosive fluid are useful for potion making, despite being classified as Class B Tradeable Materials (Dangerous and Subject to Strict Control).
It is found in mountainous European regions. It is large and grayish purple with a humped back. It walks on larged, four-thumbed feet, has two extremely long and sharp horns made of gold (which are extremely expensive and hard to obtain and useful, powdered, for potion making) and is very aggressive. Sometimes they are ridden by mountain trolls, though they don’t seem to accept that domestication attempt and tend to attack in response. Its hide is even tougher than a dragon’s and repels most spells. Its mouth is made of tentacle-like appendages, which they use to grab food, as well as to show affection.
The griffin originated in Greece. It has the head and front legs of an eagle and the body, hind legs and tail of a lion. They eat raw meat and are really fierce creatures, being employed sometimes by wizards and witches to guard treasure, like sphinxes. Despite this, some skilled wizards have been able to befriend them.
Japanese water demon. It looks like a monkey with fish scales instead of fur, and a hollow on the top of its head where it carries water.
It feeds on human blood, but won’t attack if it is thrown a cucumber with your name carved into it. It might also be tricked into bowing: the water into the hollow in his head is his source of strength, and if it spills out, the kappa will weaken.
British and Irish water demon which can take various forms, being the most common a horse with bulrushes for a mane. It lures the unwary onto its back, and then it dives to the bottom of its river or lake and devours them. It could be overcome getting a bridle over its head by a Placement Charm, rendering it docile. It can be used as wand core material, although its properties are weaker than phoenix feathers or dragon heartstring.
The world’s largest kelpie is found in Loch Ness, Scotland. Its favorite form is that of a sea serpent.
Different appearances of merpeople can be found throughout the world, presenting all of them human and fish hybrid forms. They constitute a mysterious society for humans, but those who have mastered the language of Mermish speak of highly organized communities varying in size according to habitat and well crafted dwellings. Like the centaurs, they chose the «beast» status instead of «being», and are classified as XXXX because of the respect they should be treated with.
The oldest recorded merpeople were located in Greece and known as sirens, and it is in warm waters where beautiful creatures stated in Muggle culture are found, being the ones in northern waters less beautiful (selkies in Scotland and Merrows in Ireland). However, all of them share the special value they give to music.
Found in the Far East and India. It consists of a plumed, two legged winged creature with a serpentine body. It can reach fifteen feet of length, although it is a choranaptyxic creature: it adjusts its size to available space. Its diet consists mainly of insects, rats, birds and occasionally monkeys. It is extraordinarily aggressive to anyone approaching it, specially protecting its eggs, whose shells are made of the purest and softest silver.
Magnificent scarlet bird, swan-sized, with a long golden tail, beak and talons. It nests on top of the mountains and can be found in Egypt, India and China. When its body becomes old, it bursts into flames and rises again from the ashes as a chick; thereby, it can live for a really long time. It is a gentle creature, which has never been known to kill; it only eats plants. It is able to appear and disappear at will, just as the Diricawl.
Phoenix song is magical: it is reputed to increase the courage of the pure of heart and to fill with terror to the impure. Its teardrops have great healing properties.
It should be mentioned that, despite not being aggressive, the Phoenix classification as XXXX creature is motivated because few wizards and witches managed to domesticate it.
Giant oxen with golden hides. It is extremely rare, being scattered throughout the wilds of North America and the Far East. Drinking its blood provides you with a great strength, but the supply is very hard to find in the market due to the difficulty of getting it.
Breed of troll. It has short horns, purple hides and is hairy. They are often lurking under bridges or in rivers, hunting the ones who cross them.
Three-headed serpent with livid orange and black stripes, native to Burkina Faso, which commonly reaches a length of six or seven feet. Certain forests have been designated as unplottable by the Ministry of Magic in Burkina Faso to preserve them for the Runespoor’s sole use. The reason of this is the easiness to spot them, due to their bright colors.
Although it is not a particularly vicious beast, the Runespoor was once a favorite pet of dark wizards and witches, because of its striking and intimidating appearance. Our understanding of their curious habits is thanks to the writings of Parselmouths who kept and conversed with these serpents. We can deduce from them that every head of the Runespoor has a different purpose. The left one (as seen by the wizard or witch facing the creature) does planning tasks. It decides where to go and what to do next. The middle head is the dreamer (runespoors can remain stationary for days, lost in imaginings and splendid visions). Finally, the right one is the critic one and evaluates the other heads’ efforts with a continual irritating hiss. This head’s fangs are extremely poisonous.
This reptil doesn’t tend to live for so long, as the heads will attack each other. It is common to see a Runespoor with its right head missing, after the other ones joined forces to bite it off.
It is the only magical beast that produces eggs through its mouths. These are immensely valued for their use in potions to stimulate mental agility (there exists a flourishing black market in Runespoors and their eggs).
The Golden Snidget is a completely round bird, with a long thin beak and glissening, jewel-like red eyes. It is an extraordinarily fast flier, being able to change direction with astonishing speed thanks to the rotational joints of its wings.
The Golden Snidget is an extremely rare and protected species, existing sanctuaries worlwide. The reason of this is that once their eyes and feathers were highly prized, and it was in danger of extinction. It also was used in Quidditch, but was eventually replaced by the Golden Snitch because of this danger.
Merpeople native to Greece which are the ones that the Muggle culture references often. They are more beautiful than the merpeople from northerner waters.
See Merpeople for more information.
The Egyptian sphinx has the body of a lion and the head of a human. It has been used for over a thousand years for guarding treasures and secret hideaways. Although being an intelligent creature, able to speak human language (in fact, they are very attracted to puzzles and riddles), it is classified as beast due to its aggressiveness, which only shows up when what it is guarding is threatened.
Once believed to be a type of dragon, it is a bird-reptile hybrid with serrated steel fangs as main weapon. Native to North America, it is a distant relative of the Occamy, and its heartstrings can be used as wand cores.
Ash-coloured warthog found in Congo and Zaire. It is able to become invisible and is a dangerous creature. Its hide is highly prized for protective shields and clothing.
Black, bat-winged horses with skeletal features. It is a breed of winged horses. They are able to fly and can only be seen by those who have witnessed death. Although being classified as dangerous, Thestrals can be tamed and will treat whoever trusts them with faithfulness and obedience.
Thestrals are a misunderstood creature with a macabre reputation that doesn’t stick to reality.
Large, bird-like beast that can sense danger, and create storms as it flies. It is commonly found in the Arizona desert, but inhabits all North America. It can have sun or cloud-like patterns on its wings.
Some wand cores are made of Thunderbird tail feathers. One of Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry’s houses is named after this beast.
Fearsome creature, both with great strength and stupidity, which make trolls violent and unpredictable creatures. They can reach twelve feet of height and surpass one tone of weight. They originated in Scandinavia but can be found all around North Europe nowadays.
They use a crude language which consists of grunts. However, there’s evidence that some trolls have been able to understand and even speak some human words, and some of the most intelligent have been trained as guardians.
Newt Scamander identifies three types of trolls, although these may be merely based on myths from early folklore. The mountain troll is the largest and most vicious; it is bald and has pale-grey skin. The forest troll has pale-green skin and may have hair, which can be green or brown. The river troll has short horns and purplish skin; some of them are hairy and tend to lurk beneath bridges.
Trolls eat raw flesh from all kind of animals or humans.
Pure-white, horned horse that inhabits the forests around northern Europe. The foals are born golden, and turn silver before achieving maturity. Their hooves remain golden. The unicorn’s blood, horn and hair have highly magical properties, being its tail hairs one of the wandmaker Ollivander’s preferred substances for wand cores.
It generally avoids human contact, being in any case more likely to allow a witch to approach it than a wizard. It is an extremely agile creature, making it very difficult to capture.
Winged horses can be found worldwide and there are many different breeds. Their classification may vary between XX and XXXX. Some of them are the Abraxan (immensely powerful, really large and with a beautiful, golden coat), the Aethonan (which is chestnut in colour and popular in Britain and Ireland), the Granian (grey and particularly fast) and the Thestral (black, bat-winged horses with skeletal features, with the power of invisibility).
Law requires owners of winged horses to cast a Disillusionment Charm on them regularly.
Native to Tibet, it may be related to trolls. Its hair, which grows head to foot, is pure white. It devours anything that meets it, making it impossible to study; however, it fears fire and may be repelled by skilled wizards and witches.
