What is Pottermore?

Pottermore, the digital publishing, e-commerce, entertainment and news company from J.K. Rowling, is the global digital publisher of Harry Potter and J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World. As the digital heart of J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World, pottermore.com is dedicated to unlocking the power of imagination. It offers news, features, and articles as well as new and previously unreleased writing by J.K. Rowling.

Basically, it’s a must for anyone obsessed with J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world.

Right now we don’t know if Pottermore accounts will be connected to Wizards Unite or not. However, there’s definitely a chance that players will be able to login to Wizards Unite using their Pottermore accounts.

This speculation is based on Pokémon Go, where players can use their Pokémon Trainer Club accounts to login.

Even if there’s no direct connection between Pottermore accounts and Wizards Unite, Pottermore is a fun website with plenty to do and to read.

Check mobile device compatibility for Wizards Unite

Will your mobile device be compatible with Wizards Unite?

While Niantic hasn’t released supported devices for Wizards Unite, they do list the minimum necessary requirements to play Ingress and Pokémon Go. If your smart phone can’t play either of those AR games, it probably can’t play Wizards Unite.

According to Niantic’s game websites, these are the devices currently supported.

Android for Wizards Unite

Pokémon Go

  • Android 4.4 or above
  • Rooted devices are not supported
  • Preferred resolution of 720×1280 pixels (Not optimized for tablet)
  • Strong internet connection (Wi-Fi, 3G, or 4G)
  • GPS and Location Services

Ingress

  • Minimum resolution of 480×800 pixels
  • Minimum of 512MB RAM
  • ARMv6+ processor
  • GPU that supports OpenGL ES 2.0
  • Strong Wi-Fi or network connection
  • GPS
  • Android 4.0+

iOS for Wizards Unite

Pokémon Go

  • iPhone 5s or above
  • iOS 9 or above
  • Strong internet connection (Wi-Fi, 3G, or 4G)
  • GPS and Location Services
  • Jailbroken devices are not supported

Ingress

  • iOS 7, 8 and 9
  • Strong Wi-Fi or network connection
  • GPS
  • Jailbroken devices are not supported

Finally, there is also the possibility that Wizards Unite will have its own AR+ mode, similar to the feature in Pokémon Go. This speculation is based on the official announcement from Niantic.

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will use state-of-the-art augmented reality mobile technology to put magic in the hands of aspiring wizards and witches worldwide.

If you want to enjoy the advanced AR technology, then upgrade your current smart phone to one that supports AR+ in Pokémon Go. AR+ mode is currently only available for iPhone 6s and newer models running on iOS 11+.

Check your phone plan

If Wizards Unite will be your first time playing an AR mobile game, then check your phone plan ASAP! AR games use up a lot of data. Unless you plan on playing exclusively in areas with free WIFI, then you need a phone plan with affordable data. You don’t want to pay excessive fees for going over your monthly limit!

Buy a portable battery pack

AR mobile games don’t just use up a lot of data–they drain your phone battery FAST! If you want to spend a few leisurely hours playing Wizards Unite, then you need to invest in an external battery.

These are two of the battery packs I own, both available on Amazon. Note: the two links below are affiliate links.

Start playing Pokémon Go

For a chance to be invited to the beta version of Wizards Unite, we recommended you level up your Pokémon Go and Ingress accounts. But what if you just want to be prepared for the general release of Wizards Unite?

If you’re not already familiar with playing Niantic games, then you should start playing Pokémon Go for a few reasons.

  • Familiarize yourself with how AR games work in general.
  • Improve the dexterity of your finger movements in Niantic mobile games.
  • Become more physically active.

Practicing all of this will help you prepare for the launch of Wizards Unite.

Study Pokémon Go maps

If you haven’t played Pokémon Go yet (and you should), then this tip is especially for you.

As mentioned above, Niantic currently has two other AR games: Ingress and Pokémon Go. They both use the same real-world map data, although Pokémon Go has less Pokéstops and Gyms (real-world locations) than Ingress has Portals (also real-world locations).

Wizards Unite will most likely also utilize real-world locations, whether they’re Portkeys, or Ley Lines, or Wizarding Schools, or something else magical. Niantic will most likely use the same real-world map data as their other AR games.

If you live in a densely-populated city in a wealthy country, then you shouldn’t have any problem playing Wizards Unite without any initial research. However, if you live in a rural area, or a developing country, then you should study Pokémon Go maps in advance.

These maps will show locations for Pokéstops (Portkeys?) and Gyms (Wizarding Schools?) in the game of Pokémon Go. You want to find an area with a concentration of these, like a public park. These locations will provide the items you need to play Wizards Unite.

So tell me, Potterheads.
