Earlier today, Los Angeles Times posted an interview with Kevin Tsujihara, chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. The interview covers a variety of information, including a juicy little tidbit on Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.
LA Times asked Tsujihara about AT&T’s new ownership of Warner Bros. Tsujihara responded:
You look at something like 5G. At first you think, ‘Oh, that doesn’t matter for a studio.’ It actually could have a significant impact on our ability to deliver content. Another thing that’s really exciting is the world of VR and AR. I don’t think we’ve figured out exactly what that is going to be, but 5G is going to turbocharge the ability to deliver that experience.
LA Times followed up by asking what technology projects are currently in the works. Tsujihara gave this exciting response:
The one that’s the closest is this “Harry Potter: Wizards Unite” [augmented reality] video game project coming out this summer from Niantic, the maker of “Pokemon Go.” That’s a world where, clearly, 5G and faster connectivity with a mobile device is going to make that game better.
For the last few months, Niantic and Warner Bros. have remained tight-lipped about a release date or release date window. This interview possibly reveals a Wizards Unite release date window…
Keep in mind some of the interviews from 2018. At one point, John Hanke, CEO of Niantic, said Wizards Unite would come out in the second half of 2018. At another point, Anne Beuttenmüller, Niantic’s Head of Product Marketing in the EMEA region, said Wizards Unite would come out by the end of 2018.
Obviously it’s now 2019, and we still don’t have Wizards Unite.
So how much should we trust this new information on a Wizards Unite release date?
I’m taking it as an exciting possibility, but not a guarantee. Call me a cynic, but I’m not getting my hopes up for a Wizards Unite release before December 2019!
Harry Potter: Wizards Unite release date speculation
This summer would actually be perfect timing to release Wizards Unite. More specifically, July 31st would be the perfect Wizards Unite release date. In fact, to quote myself from July 2018…
July 31st is both Harry Potter’s and J.K. Rowling’s birthday. July is also the month Pokémon GO launched back in 2016, meaning Niantic has experience with releasing a game then. (Hopefully experience Niantic is learning from). July is smack dab in the middle of summer, with kids out of school and plenty of warm weather to encourage a location-based game.
It would also line up with a beta test. Niantic started beta-testing Pokémon GO in March 2016. They released the game only after a full three months of beta-testing.
If Niantic plans a similar beta test for Wizards Unite, there’s still plenty of time to release the beta version before July 31, 2019.
