Guessing game release dates is hard, even when the context is harmless speculation. With that being said, remember that this is a speculative Wizards Unite article, not an established fact. We’re posting this to spark a conversation and see what our readers think.
When talking about potential Harry Potter Wizards Unite release dates, two dates come to mind:
- September 1st, 2018
- July 1st, 2018
If you are not aware, September 1st marks the start of a new academic year in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. An autumn release date would be a perfect fit for an augmented reality game set in the Harry Potter universe and would give the development studio ample time to develop and test the initial version of the game.
The following quote is taken from the Harry Potter wikia site:
Term begins on 1 September. Students usually reach Hogwarts via the Hogwarts Express, which leaves from Platform 9¾ of London’s King’s Cross Station at 11 a.m. sharp.
However, there is something else to be considered — weather. September is the beginning of Autumn in the Northern hemisphere and the beginning of Spring in the Southern hemisphere, making this a sweet spot for the whole globe.
If we’ve learned anything from Pokémon GO, it’s that winter is not the best time to play games that promote real world exploration and as Niantic loves to put it, “adventures on foot”.
What about July 1st, 2018?
Pokémon GO launched on July 6th 2016, just in time to make the summer of 2016 one of the best summers of our adult lives. The aforementioned September release date has only one potential problem: weather, although good, is still worse than summer in the Norther hemisphere.
We believe Niantic and Portkey Games could target this date in order to appease the English speaking Harry Potter fan base, typically found in the Northern hemisphere.
However, we must admit that a September date makes much more sense.
