It goes without saying that Halloween plays an extremely important role in the Wizarding World. In case you need a refresher, here are a few of the most important Halloween events that take place in the Harry Potter universe.
- 1981- Lord Voldemort disappears after murdering James and Lily Potter, having been mysteriously thwarted by Harry
- 1991- the infamous “It’s Levi-O-sa, not Levio-SA” Charms class takes place in which the first-years are taught Wingardium Leviosa, followed by the Trio’s just-as-infamous encounter with a Troll in the bathroom after the Halloween feast
- 1992- Nearly-Headless Nick throws his 500th Deathday Party and the basilisk was released from the Chamber of Secrets for the first time in 50 years, petrifying Mrs. Norris
- 1993- Sirius Black slashes the portrait of the Fat Lady when she forbids his entrance, throwing the entire school into fits of paranoia
- 1994- the Triwizard Champions are chosen: Fleur Delacour, Viktor Krum, and- shockingly- two Hogwarts champions: Cedric Diggory and Harry Potter
Now that you’re caught up, let’s visit the North tower at Hogwarts and gaze into a crystal ball to do one of my favorite things: speculate!
Obviously Halloween is the perfect time for the HPWU to launch a unique in-game experience for those of us who play Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. Before we speculate, let’s establish some precedent.
In Pokémon GO, Ghost-type spawns are boosted in-game and have even been tied to special quests in the past (ie: Spiritomb). Since Niantic has worked extra hard in the past to bring special events around holidays, I think it’s safe to say there’s a possibility we’ll see something unique take place for witches and wizards all over the globe, too!
I, for one, am cautiously optimistic that something really cool will come during the week leading up to Halloween. As was previously announced, another Brilliant Event is coming October 8th-14th (Week 1) and October 22nd-28th (Week 2). In the past, each event has been named and this one is no different. In the update, we learned the “Fighting Forces Brilliant Event” is on the horizon. But is that all?
Not to say that I’m ungrateful for another Brilliant Event (because we all need those tasty Restricted Section Books) but I feel like this month requires something a little more involved. This holiday is meant to be one of the biggest of the year in the Wizarding World, arguably even taking the top spot from Christmas. Mainly, my curiosity is piqued in regards to two things: world spawns (what show up on the map) during the month and Community Day!
Firstly, let’s talk about world spawns. An obvious boost to the Dark Arts Family spawns seems to make sense without breaking the game too much. Personally, I would love to see more copies of Magick Moste Evile floating around my farming locations. Expect Vanishing Cabinets, Hand(s) of Glory and Slugs to be popping up all over the map, too! The common Traces (or Traces located on the Borgin & Burkes page of the Dark Arts registry) are certainly things I would assume we will see more often. Whether that is the case is or not, of course, is an entirely different matter.
Secondly, the month of October seems like a clear shoe-in for a Dark Arts Community Day! We have seen boosts to specific Families and even specific Traces within Families (like the Time-Turner on Mysterious Artefacts Community Day) in past Community Days, and I am praying to Godric Gryffindor that we are blessed with super-rare spawns like Percival Graves and Young Tom Riddle along with boosted Fortress Foundables like the Magic Is Might statue and The Gravestone of Tom Riddle Sr.
(I also just want to throw out there that Adversaries are still in the game and have their own Registry pages under the “Challenges” tab, yet we have no idea how or where to find/fight them.. Halloween feels like a great time to introduce some new, spooky foes!)
Lastly, I am holding out hope that there will be some game aesthetic changes as well. When Halloween rolls around, it never fails to give me those Sorcerer’s/Philosopher’s Stone feels. I imagine floating pumpkins, piles of food at the Halloween feast, and the whisper of a friendly ghost as it passes by.
Hopefully the HPWU developers have already planned for an incredibly immersive Halloween experience for those of us in the Wizards Unite community. Either way, you can guarantee I will be out there grinding and fighting the Calamity. See you out there!
