Miniature Hungarian Horntail

Feared Adversaries are still an exciting challenge for players in Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. To help you succeed in your efforts to slay them, the Wizards Unite Hub continues to partner with Plotter101 to create detailed Adversaries guides. Up next is the Ancient Hungarian Horntail and its guards — a Formidable Arcomantula and the Sphinx.

Ancient Hungarian Horntail in Wizards Unite

The Ancient Hungarian Horntail is the 9th Adversary in the Challenges Registry of Feared Adversaries. Going down the list, each Adversary is more difficult, so the Horntail is the most dangerous dragon in the game. Harry faced this particular dragon, and both its guards, in the Triwizard Tournament.

No description available. On the Horntail’s Registry page, players need to place 1 Adversary and 4 Artefacts to prestige the page. These are:

  • Ancient Hungarian Horntail
  • Harry’s Firebolt
  • Triwizard Tournament Golden Egg
  • Dragon Tooth
  • Triwizard Tournament Miniature Hungarian Horntail

To earn the Horntail Fragments and Artefact Fragments, you need to defeat the Guards and the dragon itself. These are:

  • Formidable Acromantula
  • Sphinx
  • Ancient Hungarian Horntail

For each Guard you defeat, you earn 1 Artefact Fragment. When you defeat the dragon, you earn 1 Ancient Hungarian Horntail Fragment and 1 Artefact Fragment.

How to Defeat the Ancient Hungarian Horntail in Wizards Unite

To defeat any Adversary, players need a combination of Spell Energy, Potions, and time. How many of these resources you use will depend on your Profession, your Profession’s Lesson Plan, and your Profession’s Advanced Adversarial Combat. The more you complete in your skill trees, the less resources you will need to defeat Adversaries.

If you have completed more than one Profession’s Lesson Plan, you should play as a Magizoologist to defeat the Ancient Hungarian Horntail. That said, you won’t know the type of Adversary until you enter the Adversary Encounter. Once you start the Adversary Encounter, there is not a way to change your Profession. Some players have successfully used a second device to change Profession, but this can cause a glitch that kicks you out of the Adversary Encounter, so do this at your own risk.

When the Ancient Hungarian Horntail is a boosted Adversary, like during an event, you should play as an Magizoologist for the extra advantage. To reiterate, this advice is only true if you are equally strong in more than one Profession.

Damage Dealt by the Ancient Hungarian Horntail and Guards

When trying to defeat the Ancient Hungarian Horntail Adversary chain, you will lose health points (HP) whenever the Foe hits you (at times you might be lucky to Dodge!). The chart below outlines how much stamina you will lose, depending on your Profession.

Foe Professor Magizoologist Auror >50% Auror <50%
Formidable Acromantula 17 13 26 23
Sphinx 27 20 42 37
Ancient Hungarian Horntail 55 43 80 73

Resources Needed to Defeat the Ancient Hungarian Horntail

Plotter101 put together the following chart to help players prioritize their resources when completing the Ancient Hungarian Horntail Adversary chain.

Displaying 09 Horntail.PNG

Accessibility note: If you are using a screen reader, the following text explains this chart about the Ancient Hungarian Horntail chain.

Aurors will need to use 4 Spell Energy and 0 Potions to defeat the Formidable Acromantula; 9 Spell Energy and potentially 1 Healing Potion to defeat the Sphinx; 5 Spell Energy, 1 Strong Exstimulo Potion, AND 1 Wit-Sharpening Potion OR 4 Spell Energy and 1 Potent Exstimulo Potion to defeat the Ancient Hungarian Horntail.

Magizoologists will need to use 3 Spell Energy and 0 Potions to defeat the Formidable Acromantula; 12 Spell Energy and 0 Potions to defeat the Sphinx; 7 Spell Energy, 1 Strong Exstimulo Potion, AND 1 Wit-Sharpening Potion OR 6 Spell Energy and 1 Potent Exstimulo Potion to defeat the Ancient Hungarian Horntail.

Professors will need to use 6 Spell Energy and 0 Potions to defeat the Formidable Acromantula; 8 Spell Energy and 0 Potions to defeat the Sphinx; 10 Spell Energy, 1 Strong Exstimulo Potion, AND 1 Wit-Sharpening Potion OR 6 Spell Energy and 1 Potent Exstimulo Potion to defeat the Ancient Hungarian Horntail.

Fewer Potions could be used during combat against the dragon, but you will need to sacrifice Spell Energy or Healing Potions to do so.

These recommendations assume that players have completed 10/15 nodes in Advanced Adversarial Combat. If you have not done this, you will use more resources.

Personally, as a Professor with 12/15 nodes completed, I do not use any Potions against the 1st or 2nd Guards, unless I need to save on Spell Energy. I typically use 1 Potent Exstimulo Potion against the Ancient Hungarian Horntail, with Healing Potions available in case of bad RNG.

How to Defeat the Sphinx by Profession

Before we can battle the Ancient Hungarian Horntail, we need to deal with the Sphinx who appears as the 2nd Guard in the dragon’s Adversary Chain.

Plotter101 put together this chart to show the different combinations of resources (Spell Energy, Potions, and time) necessary to defeat the Sphinx.

Accessibility note: If you are using a screen-reader, the following text explains this chart about the Sphinx, who is the second Guard in the Horntail chain.

How to Defeat the Sphinx as an Auror

Let’s look at the resources required by an Auror to defeat the Sphinx.

If an Auror does not use any Potions during combat, they most likely will not need to use any Healing Potions to defeat the Sphinx, and they will use 8-12+ Spell Energy. The average time needed to defeat the Sphinx will be 74 seconds. With this strategy, a player will win 79.6% of the time.

If an Auror uses 1 Wit-Sharpening Potion and 1 regular Exstimulo Potion during combat, they should not need any Healing Potions to defeat the Sphinx, and they will use 5-9+ Spell Energy. The average time needed to defeat the Sphinx will be 47.5 seconds. With this strategy, a player will win 98.29% of the time.

If an Auror uses 1 Strong Exstimulo Potion, they should not need any Healing Potions to defeat the Sphinx, and they will use 4-8+ Spell Energy. The average time needed to defeat the Sphinx will be 33.1 seconds. With this strategy, a player will win 99.92% of the time.

If you have not done this, you can calculate whether or not you need Potions by using this spreadsheet (updated!) with data compiled by Plotter101 and his Discord. You will need to make a copy in your own Google Drive in order to update the player stats on the Summary page.

Final Thoughts on the Adversary

Like all dragons you encounter in Wizards Unite, the fact that they fly means they can be tricky to engage with. You may not want to take the Ancient Hungarian Horntail on each time you have the opportunity. Especially if you’re a newer player, or a casual player, you can start collecting Artefact Fragments by defeating the Guards. Then you can back out from the Adversary Encounter to save on Potions and Spell Energy.

Be prepared to use more Healing Potions than you might with other Adversaries too. If you have fallen below 40% on your HP meter, it is good to know that you can push the Potion button while the Ancient Hungarian Horntail is still dealing with your spell cast. That way you won’t miss the opportunity to heal yourself in case they breathe fire several times in a row.

As already stated in every single Adversaries guide, prioritize finishing one Profession’s Lesson Plan. All Professions have strengths and weaknesses, so consider your overall game strategy as a player, beyond Adversaries alone.

What do you think about the Ancient Hungarian Horntail? What other advice would you offer players of different levels?
