Update: Pottermore has confirmed that Harry Potter Wizards Unite will release in 2019.
Neither Niantic nor Portkey Games has confirmed a Harry Potter: Wizards Unite release date. However, a few interviews with Niantic CEO John Hanke imply a 2019 release instead of the originally-suggested 2018 release.
Here’s everything we know so far about a possible release date for Wizards Unite.
More details about Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will be announced in 2018.
Many hopeful fans interpreted this as the game coming out in 2018. However, the official announcements do not provide concrete details on a Wizards Unite release date.
In April 2018, Hanke said Wizards Unite would launch in the second half of 2018.
A few weeks later, he further narrowed down this timeline during a conversation with Mike Schmid on a shared flight. Hanke said Wizards Unite will probably release “more by the end of the year,” because Niantic is “still working on some things.”
This happened in June, which is all we can say about that.
Which brings us to last week, when Eurogamer interviewed Hanke during the Dortmund Safari Zone event for Pokémon Go.
Watch the video below for all the pertinent details from this interview, including hints about beta-testing Wizards Unite, or keep reading for select quotes about the release date.
Tom Phillips from Eurogamer mostly talked to Hanke about Pokémon Go. However, Phillips did ask a few questions about Wizards Unite.
Hanke’s responses were… noncommittal, at best.
Was it still coming this year? I asked. “We’ll see,” was the reply.
Phillips tried another angle to get more news about a release date.
So it could release this year, but could also release next? I asked. “Mmhmm,” Hanke said.
There you have it, folks! Wizards Unite could release in 2018 or in 2019! That just narrows it down to about 18 months of possibilities…
That said, some months are more likely than others.
Harry Potter: Wizards Unite release date speculation
First, the Wizards Unite beta isn’t out yet. Niantic first released the beta version of Pokémon Go in March 2016. They expanded beta-testing in April, again in May, and again in June. Only after three months of beta-testing did Niantic launch Pokémon Go…
And we all remember the bugs and server issues from that launch.
So even if the beta version of Wizards Unite comes out this month, the worldwide release most likely won’t be for another three months. That makes October 2018 the earliest possible month for Wizards Unite to launch.
Will Wizards Unite come out on Halloween? It is an important holiday in the wizarding world, after all.
Another possibility is if Warner Bros. wants to tie-in the release of Wizards Unite with the debut of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald in November 2018. Universal recently did this by releasing their own augmented-reality game, Jurassic World Alive, shortly before the debut of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, the latest film in the Jurassic Park franchise.
Gitta of The Portkey Adventures discusses this theory in-depth in her latest video. The link is cued up to when she talks about Jurassic World Alive.
Finally, there are two possible launch windows in 2019.
The first is March 2019. This is the beginning of spring and warm weather for at least two of the target markets for Wizards Unite: the United Kingdom and the United States. It’s also still early enough in 2019 to make the wait for Wizards Unite a little more bearable.
The second is July 2019. Specifically, July 31, 2019.
July 31st is both Harry Potter’s and J.K. Rowling’s birthday. July is also the month Pokémon Go launched back in 2016, meaning Niantic has experience with releasing a game then. (Hopefully experience Niantic is learning from). July is smack dab in the middle of summer, with kids out of school and plenty of warm weather to encourage a location-based game.
For now, this is all Harry Potter fans know about the release date of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. Ideally Niantic would launch a flawless game in the next few months, but I would rather wait longer for a strong launch than relive those first few weeks of Pokémon Go.
