I am so excited for the latest Brilliant Event in Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. Why? Two words:

Dark. Witch.

That’s right! Dark Witch returns after her brief appearance last year during Harrowing Halloween. This time, she’ll be a Brilliant Oddity.

Also, good news for anyone frustrated by the first week of Darkness Rising. The HPWU developers listened to player feedback. The strength of all Brilliant Oddities (including the Poacher and the Snatcher) is reduced for the second week. The tasks will also be more manageable.

Darkness Rising Brilliant Event Week 2 Guide

Once again, this Brilliant Event has been adapted so you can play at home. Please continue to stay safe and follow all local laws and guidelines.

Keep reading for the Brilliant Event details. I’ve also put together an extra-special video featuring the Dark Witch!

Brilliant Event Overview

The HPWU developers listened to your feedback! They nerfed the Brilliant Oddities.

Here are the updated HP of the Brilliant Oddities:

  • Brilliant Poacher: 400 (Previously 500)
  • Brilliant Snatcher: 500 (Previously 700)

Brilliant Event Tasks

These tasks are easier than what we’ve seen in recent events. To prepare for the second set of tasks, do not visit the Brilliant Registry Page until you reach that step!

Darkness Rising Quest 1/4

Hold on to a few Tonic for Trace Detection after Community Day weekend.

Collect Ingredients or Portmanteaus 2 Times 2 Snowdrop
Use 2 Tonic for Trace Detection 1 Ginger Root
Return 10 Brilliant Dark Wizard Foundables 2 Strong Exstimulo Potions

1st Quest Rewards

  • 550 Wizarding XP
  • 2 Restricted Section Books
  • 50 Brilliant Family XP
  • 10 Spell Energy

Darkness Rising Quest 2/4

The first task refers to ANY Foundables, so that’s pretty easy.

Using Master Notes will slow you down a bit. To get through this task quickly, you have a few options. The free option is to brew Exstimulo Potions or Healing Potions. You can also spend Gold on a Gold Cauldron or to collect Potions immediately.

To collect Brilliant Darkness Rising Runestones, visit the Brilliant Registry Page. Each time you level up, you collect a Runestone.

Return 20 Foundables 6 Sneezewort
Use Master Notes 5 Times 2 Armadillo Bile
Collect 4 Brilliant Darkness Rising Runestones 1 Dark Detector

2nd Quest Rewards

  • 1 Brilliant Giant Stone Hand Registry Image
  • 750 Wizarding XP
  • 75 Brilliant Family XP
  • 3 Restricted Section Books
  • 10 Spell Energy

Darkness Rising Quest 3/4

Pop on a Baruffio’s Brain Elixir, and do a bunch of Wizarding Challenges in the Tower or Forest Chambers. You’ll quickly finish the first two tasks.

Earn 7500 Wizarding XP from Wizarding Challenges 1 Silver Key
Defeat 15 Foes in Wizarding Challenges 2 Erumpent Horn
Return 15 Brilliant Dark Witch Foundables 10 Snowdrop

3rd Quest Rewards

  • 1250 Wizarding XP
  • 75 Brilliant Family XP
  • 5 Restricted Section Books
  • 10 Spell Energy

Darkness Rising Quest 4/4

I have an entire video on grinding Wizarding XP. Just use a Baruffio’s Brain Elixir and your Trace Charm strategically.

The easiest way to place Images quickly on your Brilliant Registry Page is to WAIT when those Images are ready. Don’t place the Brilliant Dark Witch or the Brilliant Dark Wizard until you reach this step. Then do a bunch of Wizarding Challenges with a Brilliant Runestone to place the Brilliant Giant Stone Hand multiple times.

Earn 7500 Wizarding XP from Traces 1 Spell Book
Place 5 Images on Brilliant Borgin & Burkes Registry Page 1 Spell Book
Collect 15 Mysterious Note pieces by returning Brilliant Darkness Rising Traces 1 Spell Book

4th Quest Rewards

  • 5 Restricted Section Books
  • 50 Gold
  • 5 Defense Against the Dark Arts Books
  • 30 Spell Energy
  • Brilliant Ominous Mask Registry Image

Darkness Rising BONUS Assignment!

The two Potions tasks are rough, not because they’re difficult, but because they take time and precious resources. You can brew some Potions in advance and wait to collect until you reach the Bonus Assignment.

For using Exstimulo Potions in Wizarding Challenges, the regular ones are fine. You have to start the Potion in the Wizarding Challenge for it to count. The Potion can’t carry over from using it on a Trace.

We also have another Portkey task. Remember that only unlocking (that is, walking off) Portmanteaus count. Opening the Portkey is different. Also, these can be any Portmanteaus. You’re not limited to the Brilliant ones.

Brew 10 Potions 4 Snowdrop
Return 45 Brilliant Darkness Rising Foundables 1 Potent Exstimulo Potion
Use Any 10 Exstimulo Potions in Wizarding Challenges 1 Spell Book
Defeat Highest Chamber Unlocked 1 Time 10 Spell Energy
Unlock 5 Portmanteaus 1 Silver Key

Bonus Assignment Rewards

  • 2000 Wizarding XP
  • 100 Brilliant Family XP
  • 5 Defense Against the Dark Arts Books
  • 1 Brilliant Event Title
  • 5 Brilliant Borgin Registry Images
  • 20 Spell Energy

Brilliant Foundables and Where to Find Them

Just like previous Brilliant Events, you will only be able to encounter some of these Brilliant Foundables in the wild. The others are available as rewards for completing event tasks, doing Wizarding Challenges with Brilliant Runestones, and unlocking Brilliant Portkeys.

Tips to Complete the Brilliant Event

If this is your first Brilliant Event, these tips will help you complete the Brilliant Event before the time runs out. With careful planning, you can complete the Bonus Assignment as well!

  • As a reminder, Part 1 Portkeys will give you Part 1 Rewards anytime you open them, even if you wait to open them during Part 2. Brilliant Portkeys will glow purple on the Map. Be sure to collect 5 Portkeys during the Brilliant Event, even if you don’t open them all during the event.
  • However, if you’re nervous about finding enough time to walk, you can also collect the Portkey Brilliant Foundable by finishing the entire Bonus Assignment.
  • To find the Brilliant Giant Stone Hand, you must do Wizarding Challenges with the specific Brilliant Event Runestones. To minimize your Spell Energy, stick with the Ruins Chambers. It might take a few extra Wizarding Challenges to get the 3 Foundables you need, but you’ll be able to do so quickly, without expending too many resources.
  • If you decide to visit Inns, Fortresses, or Greenhouses during this event, continue to practice social distancing. Check out our previous article on staying safe while playing Wizards Unite.
  • Save your Scrolls and your Restricted Section Books until the end of the event. Then use our guide to spend them wisely! That said, most Aurors and Magizoologists have already earned all the necessary Restricted Section Books, and many Professors have also done so. At this point, you can hold on to your resources in case they’re needed for the next lesson plan, you can start working on a second profession, or you can invest in SOS Training. That is a personal decision, so good luck!
  • If you’re already working on a second profession, and you’ve chosen Auror, try playing as an Auror. You might defeat the Brilliant Oddities more quickly, depending on your level of Auror.

Brilliant Event Bundles

There are 4 bundles total that will be available during this event. Be sure to snag the Free Bundle as soon as the event starts! The Bonus Bundle will not be available until the Bonus Assignment is unlocked, so keep that in mind.

Graphic courtesy of Orange Wizard. I’ve broken down the value of the bundles below, but feel free to check my math!

Infographic depicting bundles available during Darkness Rising Week 2

The SOS Bundle is 5 Silver Keys and 100 Spell Energy for 450 Gold.

You can now buy 10 Silver Keys for 720 Gold, making the individual value of each Silver Key 72 Gold. 5 Silver Keys is thus worth 360 Gold.

100 Spell Energy costs 200 Gold.

If you only need Silver Keys, this is not a good value. However, if you need cheap Spell Energy, this bundle is worth 560 Gold.

The Brilliant Bundle is 4 Baruffio’s Brain Elixirs, 10 Potent Exstimulo Potions, and 3 Tonics for Trace Detection, all for 810 Gold.

A single Baruffio’s Brain Elixir costs 100 Gold in Diagon Alley. However, if you just need to buy the rare Ingredients, it’s a better deal to spend 20 Gold for 1 Dragon Claw and 12 Gold for 2 Toadstools, use Master Notes in the Cauldron, and then collect the Potion immediately for 62 Gold. So let’s put the value of Brain Elixirs at 94 Gold.

Thus it costs 376 Gold to buy 4 Brain Elixirs.

A single Potent Exstimulo Potion in Diagon Alley costs 75 Gold. However, if you have all of the common Ingredients, it’s a better deal to buy 1 Unicorn Hair for 30 Gold, use Master Notes in the Cauldron, and then collect the Potion immediately for 41 Gold. So let’s put the value of Potent Exstimulo Potions at 71 Gold.

Thus it costs 710 Gold to buy 10 Potent Potions.

A single Tonic for Trace Detection in Diagon Alley costs 60 Gold. However, you can also buy 4 for 220 Gold, so the individual value is 55 Gold.

Thus 3 Tonics are worth 165 Gold.

This puts the value of the Brilliant Bundle at 1251 Gold, a savings of 441 Gold. This is actually a really good deal, especially if you lack the rare Ingredients to brew these Potions. If you don’t need the Tonics, the value is 1086 Gold, which is still a good deal.

Finally, the Bonus Assignment Bundle! This includes:

  • 12 Potent Exstimulo Potions
  • 12 Tonics for Trace Detection
  • 5 Silver Keys
  • 150 Spell Energy

Using the same logic above, 12 Potent Potions are worth 852 Gold.

12 Tonics are worth 660 Gold.

5 Silver Keys are worth 360 Gold.

150 Spell Energy is worth 300 Gold.

Thus the total value of the Bonus Bundle is 2,172 Gold, a savings of just 72 Gold. This is not really a good deal.

Oh thank goodness!! I’m so glad they listened to players and the Oddity Foundables won’t be such spell energy suckers. And that the tasks are all reasonable. I’ve been hoarding spell energy and spell energy gifts, waiting to see, so thanks for the great news!

I’m planning on filling up on the Community Day portkeys this weekend, so those will help with that last task, since they’re only 1K.

Well, at least they did something about the ridiculous strength of the Oddity Foundables. That’s the good part.

Still, I really don’t like the task where I have to use X potions in a wizarding challenge. Usually I just end up using potions for the sake of using potions, not because I need to use them.

Very glad this isn’t so rough. Another way to brew potions quickly is to hit those brew reduction SOS lessons.

Aww, I liked the fact that it was challenging for a change. Having such high HP for the foundables made it more fun. I like the fact that you have to raise your skill level or work harder or smarter to beat them. If its too easy to beat, there is not challenge. One shotting Dragons is lame and not believable. I would like to see more tower levels and challenges to beat a level that shows RED in the tower Solo. ITs doable but challenging, that would be a fun challenge to beat.

I’m glad someone found high HP foundables with negligible rewards fun, but for most players they were a major time and energy sink. For any maxed player they weren’t hard, they just took a ton of resources for very little reward. Brilliant events are supposed to be accessible to the average player, and that last one really wasn’t. This one has a much more reasonable balance, and they rightly chose to not have any “brilliant XP” tasks. I’m sure they will come out with higher tower levels, just as they are supposed to release additional profession skill trees. As to… Read more »

This event has oddity types, which isn’t a challenge to get, just takes longer and more spell energy. You are going to get the oddity type as long as you have enough spell energy and hit points left. It is illogical to have this so hard, when dragons are easier. How is a person harder to get than a dragon?! The problem with having these so hard is they take more energy than shows up on the map, yet we are supposed to be staying home in many places. I’m one of the many rural areas that not much shows… Read more »

When you say: “However, if you’re nervous about finding enough time to walk, you can also collect the Portkey Brilliant Foundable by finishing the entire Bonus Assignment.” You still need to walk to unlock 5 portmanteaus to complete the bonus assignment, so the chances are you will unlock Brilliant Borgin anyway. Unless you stick to 1km portmanteaus of course.

Looks like first encounter with a witch or wizard is the old values but it goes down after that with the rest of the encounters. Just as an FYI for everyone.

I couldn’t play the first part of this Brilliant Event but if this is them having reduced the strength of the Foundables, I can’t imagine how annoying they were the first time around. I’ve used over 100 spell energy already! I have to go to one of our town’s little Inn hotspots (staying in the car) to re-up or I won’t be able to play the event much longer. Usually I can get by on the spell energy drops on the ground but this is wiping me out way too fast. And trying to use potions to use less spell… Read more »

I think part of the frustration around this kind of foundable is that the standard attack does 96HP. If it did 100 instead of 96 you wouldn’t end up with 8 or 20 HP remaining. The only reason for them to make it this way is to make defeating them more frustrating. It seems like terrible UX to me. All that being said, I don’t personally find this week’s event particularly better than the first half. Expecting me to achieve 15000XP over 2 tasks is a ton and, especially combined with the foundables needing so many hits, makes the whole… Read more »

Ummm, this article is wrong on the stamina of the Dark Witch – she is taking 600 to defeat.

I noticed this too, but as Phil Newmark pointed out above it goes down to the new number after your first encounter (or at least they’re all 500 for me now)

Anyone else finding it odd that poachers and snatchers are way more powerful than dragons?
