Brilliant Event Guide: Circus Calamitous Week 2

28

Hey, witches and wizards, this is a challenging time for the entire world right now. Multiple areas of the world, including entire countries, are on lockdown to prevent further spread of COVID-19. I want to acknowledge this before getting into this Brilliant Event guide. I see you. I see your struggles. I encourage you to follow all local laws during this difficult time, even if it means not completing the latest event in Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.

The HPWU team has decided to continue with the second week of Circus Calamitous as scheduled, just with a few changes. This Brilliant Event will be March 24-31, 2020.

Brilliant Event Tasks

As per usual, these tasks all come straight from the development team. They should be accurate unless the HPWU developers make last-minute changes (again). If you remember from the first week of Circus Calamitous, they made last-minute changes due to player feedback. I disagree with one of the set of tasks, so if you also find it problematic, please let your complaints be known!

If anything changes, I will update this article as soon as possible!

This Brilliant Event is 4 steps long like all the others. You have to complete each section before progressing to the next one. Once you finish the regular quest steps, you can move onto the Bonus Assignment. Keep in mind that the Bonus Bundle will not unlock in the Diagon Alley store until you reach the Bonus Assignment step of the Brilliant Event.

Brilliant Portkeys from this week of the Circus Calamitous Brilliant Event will continue to feature the new Portkey Portmanteaus location: the Circus Arcanus itself! AND they will only be 1.5km Portkeys instead of the typical 3km Portkeys. Pace around your house with your phone in your pocket, or take careful walks outside while remaining at least 6 feet (about 2 meters) away from other people.

The other change is the lack of exclusive Fortress Foundables. Normally there is a Foundable that is only available by doing Wizarding Challenges with a specific Brilliant Runestone. However, to encourage social distancing, you can get this particular Foundable through Wizarding Challenges OR as a reward for completing bonus tasks.

Circus Calamitous Quest 1/4

Very easy tasks to complete while playing from home!

Collect Spell Energy from the Map 1 Time 25 Brilliant Family XP
Return 3 Brilliant Kappa Foundables 25 Brilliant Family XP

  • Oni Poster Portrait Sticker
  • Firedrakes Portrait Sticker
  • 6 Snowdrop Potion Ingredients
  • 4 Bitterroot Potion Ingredients

Circus Calamitous Quest 2/4

Brew your Exstimulo Potions in advance! That way you can quickly collect them when you reach this step. You will need to use a rental cauldron to do this, though. ALSO if you think it’s a bad idea to ask players to dine at Inns 3 times, please express your frustration (politely–don’t shoot the messengers who relate your comments back to the HPWU developers) on social media.

Use 1 Tonic for Trace Detection 250 Wizarding XP
Brew 3 of Any Exstimulo Potions 1 Powdered Dragon Claw
Dine at Inns 3 times 250 Wizarding XP

2nd Quest Rewards

  • Brilliant Registry Firedrakes Image
  • 250 Challenge XP
  • 45 Brilliant Family XP
  • 3 Restricted Section Books
  • Paris Moving Statue Portrait Animated Sticker
  • 2 Leaping Toadstool

Circus Calamitous Quest 3/4

This task hearkens back to a similar task we had in a previous event that required we hunt down “Arresto Momentum” Foundables. This time, it looks like we will be charged with the task of unlocking poor, detained beasts and creatures from around the Wizarding World by using “Alohomora,” found in The Standard Book of Spells, Chapter 7. These spawns will be boosted, and are included in an image below thanks to our friend Orange Wizard.

Use 4 of Any Exstimulo Potions 250 Wizarding XP
Return 5 Brilliant Nagini Foundables 250 Wizarding XP
Earn 750 Wizarding XP 1 Unicorn Hair

3rd Quest Rewards

  • 50 Brilliant Family XP
  • 250 Wizarding XP
  • 5 Restricted Section Books
  • French Ministry of Magic Atrium Ceiling Portrait Frame
  • French Ministry Moving Shelf Animated Portrait Frame
  • 1 Silver Key

Circus Calamitous Quest 4/4

These tasks are again easy to do at home, especially with the current boost for Tonic for Trace Detection. If you’re still struggling to find High Threat Traces, play early in the evening when Oddities are more likely to appear. Erklings and Vampires are High Threat Traces!

Use 2 Tonic for Trace Detection 2 Spell Books
Return 5 High Threat Traces 55 Brilliant Family XP
Collect Spell Energy from the Map 3 Times 500 Wizarding XP

4th Quest Rewards

  • Brilliant Registry Clown Image
  • 500 Wizarding XP
  • 5 Restricted Section Books
  • 50 Gold
  • Old-Fashioned Ministry ID Logo Portrait Frame

Circus Calamitous Week 2 BONUS Assignment!

If you complete the regular Brilliant Event quests before the Brilliant Event ends, you also have the chance to complete the Bonus Assignment.

The Brilliant Candy Floss Stand is a reward for 3 distinct tasks. You need 3 of these Foundable Fragments to place the image in your Registry. You can also find these by doing Wizarding Challenges with a Brilliant Runestone.

Earn 2000 Wizarding XP 1 Brilliant Candy Floss Stand
Use 4 Tonic Trace Detections 1 Brilliant Candy Floss Stand
Return 15 High Threat Traces 1 Baruffio’s Brain Elixir
Return 30 Brilliant Foundables Newt Scamander (Ministry of Magic) Encounter
Cast Alohomora 30 Times 1 Brilliant Candy Floss Stand

Bonus Rewards

  • 2000 Wizarding XP
  • 100 Brilliant Family XP
  • 3 Spell Books
  • Achievement Badge

Brilliant Foundables and Where to Find Them

Just like previous Brilliant Events, you will only be able to encounter some of these Brilliant Foundables in the wild. The others can be found through event tasks or Brilliant 1.5km Portkeys.

The Brilliant Candy Floss Stand is a bit different than normal. You do have the chance to find it by doing Wizarding Challenges with a Brilliant Runestone, but it will also be available as a reward for completing tasks in the Bonus Assignment.

Brilliant Where to find it Fragments to collect
Brilliant Nagini Wild Encounter 15
Brilliant Kappa Wild Encounter 15
Brilliant Firedrakes Event Tasks 1
Brilliant Clown Event Tasks 1
Brilliant Oni Poster Brilliant Portkey Portmanteaus 5
Brilliant Candy Floss Stand Bonus Event Tasks 3

Tips to Complete the Brilliant Event

If this is your first Brilliant Event, or if you’re thrown off by changes made for the pandemic, these tips will help you complete the Brilliant Event before the time runs out. With careful planning, you can complete the Bonus Assignment as well!

  • As a reminder, Part 1 Portkeys will give you Part 1 Rewards anytime you open them, even if you wait to open them during Part 2. Brilliant Portkeys will glow purple on the Map. Be sure to collect 5 Portkeys during the Brilliant Event, even if you don’t open them all during the event.
  • To brew Potions quickly, you can brew them in advance. Wait until you’re on the second quest to collect the Potions to get credit.
  • If you’ve having trouble finding Brilliant Traces, avoid flagged areas. They are less likely to spawn in those areas.
  • When visiting Inns, please continue to practice social distancing. Either stop by an Inn in your car, and sit there to collect it 3 times, or visit Inns in large open spaces, like public parks. Check out my previous article on staying safe while playing Wizards Unite.
  • Once again, Newt Scamander is a guaranteed Encounter as a reward for a Bonus task. While player reports from the first week of Circus Calamitous indicate a high success rate, returning Newt Scamander is still not guaranteed. Use a Dawdle Draught and a Potent Exstimulo Potion for the best chance at overcoming the Confoundable magic.
  • Save your Scrolls and your Restricted Section Books until the end of the event. Then use our guide to spend them wisely! That said, most Aurors and Magizoologists have already earned all the necessary Restricted Section Books, and some Professors have also done so. At this point, you can either hold on to your resources in case they’re needed for the next lesson plan, or you can start working on a second profession.

Brilliant Event Bundles

There are 4 bundles total that will be available during this event. Be sure to snag the Free Bundle as soon as the event starts! The Bonus Bundle will not be available until the Bonus Assignment is unlocked, so keep that in mind. Orange Wizard provided the infographic below explaining all of the bundles.

I will soon break down the cost/value of each bundle, so come back in a few hours to learn that. Or if your kids are stuck at home and need a new math problem, have them figure it out!

What do you think about the Circus Calamitous Brilliant Event? Do you have any strong thoughts about the necessity of visiting Inns? (I do). Share your thoughts in the comments or on any of the Wizards Unite Hub social platforms.

I don’t think the dining at inns 3 times is unreasonable. Maybe it’s just my personal experience, but I’ve found a lot of inns near or at parks, often I can reach them from my parked car. I’m just thankful there are no fortress or portkey tasks. I live in California where the whole state is sheltered in place, so I’m glad it looks like I’ll still be able to complete these while working from home. Stay safe!

in my area, I would be breaking the law by leaving home to complete the inn task. “Failure to comply with the order will be considered an immediate danger to public health and subject to a Class C misdemeanour.” if you are okay with breaking the law, that is on you. But it isn’t right to encourage others to break the law.

Shelter in place doesn’t mean go to a closed park and play a game. You may not think it’s unreasonable, but others would rather not be charged with misdemeanors much less leave the house for such a dangerously unhealthy reason.

Quite a good idea to have the tasks tailored to be solved at home. But for the Exstimulo Potions in task two I have a bad feeling as the current emphasis on Potion for Trace Detection ingredients is so strong that other ingredients are hard to find at all. I for myself have for example not found a single Re’em Blood in the last six days and having ran out of stock four days ago I cannot brew any Exstimulo Potion right now… By the way, did anybody else also experience this complete takeover of the map by nothing but… Read more »

No problem finding all sorts of ingredients here, they show up after a while. And since we’re given the task descriptions so early, it seems to me that gathering ingredients for the lowest-level exstimulo should not be a challenge 🙂
Nice to see the info a few days in advance!

I have the same issue. Hard to find Snowdrop. Abraxan and Unicorn hair.

I’m the same. Only I’ve run out of Bitter root. I’m also in Self Isolation for a further 12 days.

I’m still seeing Re’em blood every so often – although it is very rare – and Bitterroot a bit more often than that, but Snowdrop is the hardest for me to find right now. Hopefully, once the event begins, the spawns will adjust for the tasks but I agree that the Tonic for Trace detection ingredients seem to be muscling out all the others.

Devs, you need to remove the visit 3 inns task. The safest place for us all is at home, and the vast majority of us cannot reach an inn from our property. If you ask hundreds of thousands of players to make an unnecessary trip outside to complete a silly game, then this task will have a body count. Stop. Just stop. While you’re at it, if you can’t figure out a way to enable us to get fortress-only stickers without visiting a fortress, then most of us will eventually stop playing because we have nothing else to collect. This… Read more »

As long as you keep distance to other people fresh air will do you good.

Please heed this. There are several states in the US and entire countries where going to an inn is literally dangerous to your health. Be a responsible company during these trying times. If you have to post a warning to follow the quarantine rules of your area, then maybe you should consider that you’re setting a bad example by requiring going out as part of your event.

Where do you think the best place to push them on the task on social media. I’ve already mentioned it on Twitter. Millions of people are under shelter in place orders. Asking them to go out is asking them to break the law.

To brew Potions quickly, you can brew them in advance. Wait until you’re on the second quest to collect the Potions to get credit.

As you have to complete one masternote in the first set of tasks, you can’t brew in advance unless you rent a cauldron either for brewing or for the masternote.

I have a few thoughts/concerns/comments. First, I know that Wizards Unite has tried to make it possible to play from home, and I’m sure that, for some people, it is possible. But they seem to have forgotten the people who don’t live in urban areas. Before the changes due to the pandemic, I would encounter 1, possibly 2 encounters a day (without the use of Tonic for Trace Detection). With the changes, I encounter about 4 or 5 a day. Use Tonic for Trace Detection, you say? I would love to, but ingredients popping up on the map are nonexistent.… Read more »

I have a question. Since I have to go an inn anyway if I want to play due to the lack of spell energy, ingredients and trace encounters popping up at home because I live in a rural area, I will most likely get the fragments for the Brilliant Candy Floss Stand by using runestones in wizarding challenges. Are there alternative rewards for people who get the stand through fortresses instead? Do we still have to do the 3 tasks that are needed for the Brilliant Candy Floss Stand or would those tasks just show as Requirements Fulfilled? If we… Read more »

Don’t forget you can open 20 gifts per day for energy too. A quick google serve can get you a lot of friend codes and there are also places you can post your code as well.

Since quest 1 requires that we use Masters Notes, we will not be able to brew potions in advance unless a cauldron is rented.

Tom Whitmore

It’s actually not possible to brew the Exstimulo potions in advance this time — one of the steps in the first task is to Use Master Notes. In order to Use Master Notes, one has to have cleared all completed potions — at least, I haven’t found a way to get to that if I’ve got a potion to collect. So start brewing ASAP after using the Master Notes, and there should be plenty of time. I’ve generally found your tips to be useful, but this one seems a bit off the mark. Particularly if, as Petrosilus says, one is… Read more »

You can’t prebrew the potions for task 2 because task one requires you to use master notes. If you have potions ready to be collected, you can’t put master notes on a brewing potion. I’m thinking to just start three or four of the regular potions an hour before the event starts. Then when the event starts, do the master notes on the first potion. That should make things quicker for the second task. Three inns doesn’t bother me. In order to finish the daily tasks you need two inns and a battle. For that matter, you need to collect… Read more »

I live in a new development and Google finally acknowledges us buy the game still doesn’t so I only can get foundables at my house with the trace tonic. Same with energy no drops close to my house. We’ve been here over a year and I was so happy to see the tonics so I can get foundables at least but dont want to waste those all the time. Glad there are no portkey requirements. Everybody else mentioned my potion confusion.

Just so we are all clear: if you leave your home to go visit an inn to complete either the brilliant event or the daily tasks, you are breaking the law now in many countries including the UK, Italy, Spain and Germany.

No-one should leave their homes for anything except essential food and medicine. Some countries still allow leaving for exercise.

Playing games is not on the list of acceptable reasons to endanger your life and the lives of others.

They need to change the pick up spell energy requirement. Go back to picking up a port key or ingredient. I’m not spending $50 to upgrade my spell energy capacity.

Now that the task has started I’m already struggling with getting enough Brilliant foundables due to the landmark flags in my area. And now I think of it, it would be a lovely touch if these could be disabled for the weeks ahead. I am mightily tired of seeing the same 4 foundables 95% of the time and would welcome a bit more variety in the coming weeks in particular!!!

One of my part 1 tasks is pick up spell energy, not pick up 1 ingredient or portmanteau. I now have to dump 400 energy to complete it.

It’s a misdemeanor to leave the house. Going to an inn isn’t a qualifying reason to leave, nor is it worth a misdemeanor charge. I guess I won’t be finishing this event. Too bad because that is the only thing stopping me from an otherwise well thought out event. Please consider doing the SMART and HEALTHY thing and removing the inn requirement. You can be a game that motivates people to get out and move while exploring when there isn’t a pandemic. It’s irresponsible. Do better.

Looks like they updated the tasks. My 3rd task in the set of 4 is now visit 1 in. That’s still something I’m not willing / able to do. At the very least they made it easier but the change is almost pointless. Should’ve made it something else instead.
