Adversaries Event Tasks and Rewards
The debut Lethal Adversaries Event differs slightly from past Adversaries Events. Players have 2 regular sets of tasks to complete, plus a Bonus Assignment.
Rewards for all Wizards Unite events will be generous between now and the game’s end on January 31, 2022.
If you are seeing plenty of Adversaries on the Map, wait until you’ve completed all other tasks before you use the Edible Dark Mark. Then it will apply to the 2nd quest.
Quest Step | Reward |
Use 1 Edible Dark Mark | 20 Gold |
Cast 3 Maxima Attacks | 2 Wit-Sharpening Potions |
Use 6 Potions in Adversary Encounters | 1 Silver Key |
Return 8 Fragments from Barty Crouch Jr. Chains | 1 Potent Exstimulo Potion |
Overall rewards:
- 3 Defense Against the Dark Arts Books
- 500 Wizarding XP
- 100 Gold
- 30 Spell Energy
After your Edible Dark Mark expires, use a Tonic for Trace Detection to find Mad-Eye Moody’s Eye Traces.

Earn 1500 Challenge XP Through Wizarding Challenges and/or Adversary Chains | 40 Gold |

Overall rewards:
- 3 Defense Against the Dark Arts Books

Adversaries Event BONUS Tasks and Rewards
This Adversaries Event includes a Bonus Assignment! Since we do not know anything about Barty Crouch Jr.’s health, or how often you can cast Maxima, we don’t know how difficult these tasks will be.

Cast 10 Maxima Attacks | 2 Spell Books |
Return 1 Barty Crouch Jr.’s Wand Fragment | 2 Spell Books |
Return 1 Flask of Polyjuice Potion Fragment | 2 Spell Books |
Overall rewards:
- 5 Defense Against the Dark Arts Books
- 1000 Wizarding XP
- 150 Gold

How to Prepare for the Lethal Adversaries Event
This is the first Lethal Adversaries Event, so we’re going in a little blind. However, I can still offer some general advice.
At this point, if you haven’t completed an entire Profession Lesson Plan, I would plan on backing out before Barty Crouch Jr. arrives. Even the Guards will be difficult, but you can manage them with Potions.
For everyone else, work on your Advanced Adversarial Combat. It’s possible the initial 10 nodes against Feared Adversaries will also apply for Lethal Adversaries. Plus, you have to unlock those nodes anyway to start working on the nodes for Lethal Adversaries.
Strengthen your Potions through SOS Training. Brew the following Potions:
- Exstimulo Potions
- Wit-Sharpening Potions
- Healing Potions
- Tonics for Trace Detection (not as critical)
Also collect extra Ingredients for Exstimulo Potions and Wit-Sharpening Potions. The brewing time will be reduced with Master Notes during the event.
Max out your Spell Energy. Right now, Spell Energy on the Map is extremely generous, so this should be easy to do.
This SOS Training chart indicates the different nodes and their locations to improve your Potions. Note the inclusion of nodes to improve Tonic for Trace Detection.

Tips to Enjoy the Lethal Adversaries Event
Honestly, this section is difficult to fill out, for 2 reasons. 1) Wizards Unite is ending, so even a fun event is bittersweet. 2) This is our first Lethal Adversaries Event, so I don’t know the math to break down specific advice.
If you have not progressed much with Advanced Adversarial Combat, you might want to focus on the Feared Adversaries. You can still enter Barty Crouch Jr. Encounters, but consider backing out after 1-3 Guards. Otherwise, you will need to use a lot of Potions.
If you don’t need anymore Defense Against the Dark Arts Books, and you’ve already prestiged all of your Feared Adversaries, you can focus just on Barty Crouch Jr. The Dark Mark on the Map will look different between a Feared Adversary and a Lethal Adversary.
Of course, if you still need specific Feared Adversaries to prestige, you can enter an Adversary Encounter to see who it is. If you still don’t need additional DADA Books, you can back out of any Adversary you’ve already green-starred on a gold frame.
Finally, while we don’t know the exact difficulty of Barty Crouch Jr. yet, we do know he will be a greater challenge than Narcissa Malfoy. Stack a Potent Exstimulo Potion with a Wit-Sharpening Potion immediately. Restock as necessary. Keep an eye on your health bar (this is easier with the new update since low health is indicated with red around your screen), and drink Healing Potions with abundant caution.
Adversaries Event Bundles
Like all Wizards Unite events, this Adversaries Event will feature store bundles. The free store pack includes an Edible Dark Mark! Both paid bundles are repeats from past events.
Free store pack includes:
- 1 Dark Detector
- 1 Edible Dark Mark
- 2 Healing Potions
- 1 Exstimulo Potion
- 30 Spell Energy
The Arresto Adversary Bundle (800 Gold) includes:
- 3 Edible Dark Marks
- 125 Spell Energy
Is this bundle a good deal?
You can buy 5 Edible Dark Marks for 1200 Gold, making the individual value 240 Gold. Thus the value of 3 Edible Dark Marks is 720 Gold. Unless, you need discounted Spell Energy, this bundle is not good value for EDMs.
The Adversary Vanquisher Trunk (2020 Gold) includes:
- 3 Edible Dark Marks
- 125 Spell Energy
- 8 Potent Exstimulo Potions
- 8 Wit-Sharpening Potions
- 8 Strong Exstimulo Potions
3 Edible Dark Marks are worth 720 Gold.
A single Potent Exstimulo Potion in Diagon Alley costs 75 Gold. However, if you have all of the common Ingredients, it’s a better deal to buy 1 Unicorn Hair for 30 Gold, use Master Notes in the Cauldron, and then collect the Potion immediately for 41 Gold. So let’s put the value of Potent Exstimulo Potions at 71 Gold.
Thus 8 Potent Potions are worth 568 Gold.
Normally we don’t recommend spending Gold on Strong Exstimulo Potions because their Ingredients are common. However, with frequent Wizards Unite events, players are going through their Potions quickly.
Looking at just Ingredients, it’s 3 Gold each per Snowdrop, Bitterroot, and Re’em Blood, plus 12 Gold for Abraxan Hair, so 36 Gold per Strong Exstimulo Potion.
Thus 8 Strong Potions are worth 288 Gold.
I really don’t recommend spending Gold on Wit-Sharpening Potions because Ingredients will be boosted during the event, AND you can get these Potions through Gifts.
Before Spell Energy, the bundle is really not worth the price asked. I only recommend this bundle for rural players who don’t have access to Ingredients or Spell Energy. And now, with Unicorn Hair available on the Map, and boosted Spell Energy, the bundle really isn’t a good deal.

I am SOOO sad and upset this game is ending!
I’ve been playing this game for a few years now to get ready for strong events like this.
Glad you said you don’t recommend spending coins on potions!
Brita, thanks for all your comprehensive tips!
I just got my first Barty Crouch Jr encounter but got kicked out on the second guard. The first one was about as tough as the dragons so I don’t know if I’ll be able to beat Barty! I will sure try. I guess we only have three months to prestige these pages! I’m really sad about the end of the game. I’ve worked really hard on it.
Nice for the change. So far, finished all tasks in group one, but the fragments. Spent two EDMs and just got regular ones. Then a lethal showed up after the EDMs were done. Finished the first one, network error on the second. Got back to the second one and it disappeared. So only one fragment done.
For these events, finishing the event is secondary to getting the DADA books…. for me. Still the errors and RNG are annoying.
Hi Brita, thanks for your clear guides and also sad that HPWU is stopping in januari. But is this event is a sign we go out with a big bang. Had lethal adversary but with potions to do. Big coin rewards for each adversary stage (100 gold and more). So investing in vault extensions for potions is easier. (Or silver keys).
Wanted to stop after the latest news from Niantic, but I decided after the start of this event to continue until HPWU stops.
Brite thanks again.
Just started quest step 2.
the lethal adversary chain crashed two times in a row. Each time at the moment after a sub task was completed (earn 1500 challenge xp / deal 8500 damage with maxima attacks). Grrr.. try tomorrow conpleting defeat 2x barty crough. 🙁
Was able to complete all taks +bonus (which more easy then the first two tasks) in 24 hours. With 3 crashes in adversary chains. Just try to have a potion ‘enabled’ when you do a maxima spell. This does much damage to the adversary. Now replenishing potions and doing some normal adversary chains..
I play The game on an iPad Pro With all other apps closed. During this event I have had 2 game crashes, whilst the transition from choosing a potion, and going back to fight the Adversary. Being the last, while fighting Barth Crouch Jr. Very disappointing! Buggy…
With all the recent bad news about the game, it’s going to leave very bad memories on the all the wizards and witches that supported Wizards Unite.
This is so much fun! I love the Maxima spell. And the rewards are crazy!
Omg, I really want and need a bookshop in Diagon Alley. I need spellbooks to improve my Advanced Adversarial Combat skills, but since Adversaries don’t give that much challenge xp, it is taking forever. There are spellbooks in the bonus assignment, but to get there I had to burn through a stupid amount of potions (I got mapped a few times, too, so that didn’t help either). At the same time I’m now sitting on a pretty solid amount of gold. This is crazy.
I too am having a problem with Crouch encounters ending abrupltly before I can deal with Pettigrew. I don’t think I’ll be able to complete the second half of the assignments even if I throw all my potions and EDMs at it.
Thanks for the guide! Reading others comments, I’m grateful the game has only crashed on me while collecting gifts and things, not during an adversary (yet). Lethal Adversaries are super hard, lots of potions used, but also have a massive payout. As a F2P player, 530 gold every time I complete a chain is nuts (100, 110, 120, 200). Fortunately I already had a decent stockpile of potions, but I’m almost out of ingredients for brewing more, so will have to find a chance to hunt some down the next few days. Still sad things are ending, and annoyed that… Read more »
After having done multiple lethal adversaries, I found a few tactics that worked well for me. Focus damage boosts on Maxima casts- These do something like 6-7x as much damage as a regular hit, so maximum value to have your potions active for them. Don’t die. Health potions are plentiful/fast brew. Pay attention to how much health their attacks are knocking off. Don’t let yourself sit within 2-3 hits of being knocked out. Prefer to use while your maxima bar is at least 2 from full. Strategically protego between Maxima casts to preserve potion charges and recharge Maxima. Attacking refills… Read more »
Well this has been an epic fail. Kicked out of encounters wasted numerous spells potions and dark marks!
Reported bugs but still nothing done to improve game. Seems like they want people to stop playing and quit
To anyone getting kicked out to the map before they finish Barty — try this. For each adversary, cast the first Maxima that is pre-loaded, but after that, if you can wait twice as long before casting Maxima a second time, you won’t get kicked out. Maxima might look loaded and ready when it’s not. Especially if the Adversary dodges. Without going into more detail… This Maxima bug seems to affect players who aren’t as far along in their Adversary tree. I’m 12 of 15 and I don’t get kicked out, but my wife is 3 of 15 and she… Read more »
I’m 15 of 15 and got kicked out approximately half the time, always when loading a potion. Such a waste of potions, but I was finally able to finish all the assignment by buying ALOT of potions … I still came out ahead on coins though, due to the increased rewards.
Finished the bonus. Didn’t really mean to. Good amount of stuff showing up, good amount of DADA books and tons of gold. Not sure how to spend it. I guess brewing potions as I’m brewing them faster than I get ingredients. Less that 20 DADA books to get the last profession lesson and I think I need it to do better. I hit them Gary with wit sharping and potent potions. Still takes a bit.
I’m having a terrible time with getting through the Crouch adversaries – keep getting bounced out of the game for no apparent reason. I’ve wasted 6 dark marks so far. I hope Niantic will fix this and give some back, and extend the event.
