Are You Ready to Go Back to Hogwarts?!

An all-new event is happening soon in Harry Potter: Wizards Unite! Back to Hogwarts celebrates the entire journey of new Hogwarts students, from receiving your Hogwarts letter to arriving at Hogwarts castle.

This Wizards Unite guide covers all of the event tasks and rewards, plus strategic tips.

Fair warning to all players: these tasks are considerably more difficult than what we usually see in Wizards Unite events. However, the rewards are also more enticing than usual. This is a rare opportunity to earn Restricted Section Books outside of Brilliant Events, not to mention up to 180 Gold.

Not all players will be able to complete these tasks. If that is your situation, focus on the boosted Foundables instead. Two Emergency-threat Foundables will be boosted, which is an opportunity to grind Wizarding XP and Family XP.

Note: Thank you Niantic and WB Games for providing this information early so Wizards Unite Hub could create this event guide.

Back to Hogwarts Event Overview

The Calamity is manifesting memories of school supply shopping at Diagon Alley and the first day back at Hogwarts. Celebrate the start of a new term by returning themed Foundables!

Back to Hogwarts Event Tasks

The idea of this event is to follow a new Hogwarts student on their journey. Like Brilliant Events, Back to Hogwarts features 4 distinct sets of tasks. You must complete these sequentially. Each set of tasks roughly has a theme:

  • Getting your Hogwarts letter
  • Arriving at Platform 9 ¾
  • Taking the Hogwarts Express
  • Entering Hogwarts for the first time

But as you’ll notice with the tasks, the tasks only somewhat match each theme. I love the theme, but I wish the HPWU developers had stuck to the theme better.

Getting Your Hogwarts Letter

Using Master Notes is a slowdown task. If you want to spend Gold, you can either collect Potions immediately, or you can rent a Cauldron. Otherwise, stick with Potions with a short brewing time. (Also, Hogwarts students should not be brewing Potions at home).

Each time you return Hedwig, you will collect a Hogwarts Letter. Use a Tonic for Trace Detection and walk around to the best of your ability. With so many boosted Foundables, finding 12 Hedwig Foundables will take time. Use a Baruffio’s Brain Elixir at the same time to earn 7000 Wizarding XP quickly.

Any spell will work, but it has to be Great or better to count. Try to find Foundables with spells that are easy for you, like Meteolojinx Recanto (Hedwig!) or Aguamenti. (I’m pretty sure only Hermione tried simple spells at home).

Some other tips to improve spellcasting:

  • Clean your screen to help your finger move smoothly.
  • Try using a stylus if you’re struggling to get Great spells with your finger.
  • If you have access to a smaller/larger device, try casting spells on it. Some players have found success by trying a device of a different size.
Use Master Notes 4 Times 1 Healing Potion
Free Hedwig and Retrieve 12 Hogwarts Letters 1 Silver Key
Cast 15 Great (or better) Spells 6 Snowdrop
Earn 7000 Wizarding XP 1 Unicorn Hair

1st Quest Rewards

  • 1 Restricted Section Book
  • 2 DADA Books
  • 500 Wizarding XP
  • 30 Gold
  • 25 Spell Energy

Arriving at Platform 9 ¾

I really hope the journey to King’s Cross Station doesn’t involve battling Foes… But it’s required to complete these tasks. Formidable Foes have 2 stars each. Find them in Ruins V to Tower III.

Update: The Portkey task has been reduced to just a single Portkey. No need to use your Silver Keys!

Use a Tonic for Trace Detection to find boosted Oddities. Erklings and Pixies will drop the Hogwarts Express Tickets you need.

You might be able to find some Formidable Foes in Forest Chambers, but other players will be doing the same thing. Stick with Forest I to complete this task quickly.

Defeat 10 Formidable Foes in Wizarding Chambers 1 Healing Potion
Collect 1 Platform 9 ¾ Signs from a Portkey 1 Silver Key
Collect 8 Hogwarts Express Tickets from Erkling and/or Pixie Oddities 6 Snowdrop
Complete 4 Forest Chambers 1 Unicorn Hair

2nd Quest Rewards

  • 2 Restricted Section Books
  • 2 DADA Books
  • 500 Wizarding XP
  • 40 Gold
  • 25 Spell Energy

Taking the Hogwarts Express

Foundables guarded by Dementor Confoundables will be boosted. Find these and the Weasley twins by using a Tonic for Trace Detection. When you return these Foundables, you will receive the items you need to collect.

Expecto Patronum (who else heard Daniel Radcliffe yell that?) is the spell needed to overcome Dementor Confoundables. Good luck getting Great spell casts. I’m honestly not sure if I will complete this task myself.

UPDATE: Players have reported this task is now just Cast 2 Masterful Spells. Any spells should work.

Choose Dark I Chambers to complete that task quickly.

Collect 7 Hogwarts Express Engines from Dementor Encounters 1 Wit-Sharpening Potion
Collect 13 Chocolate Frog Boxes from the Weasley Twins 1 Barrufio’s Brain Elixer
Cast 2 Masterful Spells 2 Strong Exstimulo Potions
Complete 2 Dark Chambers 1 Spell Book

3rd Quest Rewards

  • 3 Restricted Section Books
  • 3 DADA Books
  • 500 Wizarding XP
  • 50 Gold
  • 25 Spell Energy

Arriving at Hogwarts

These tasks are mostly just a straight grind. Everything is boosted, but to find this many required Foundables, you will need to walk a lot (if possible) and use multiple Tonics for Trace Detection.

Free the Quill of Acceptance and Book of Admittance 8 Times 1 Potent Exstimulo Potion
Help Hufflepuff Students 6 Times 1 Spell Book
Help Ravenclaw Students 6 Times 1 Spell Book
Help Slytherin Students 6 Times 1 Spell Book
Help Gryffindor Students 6 Times 1 Spell Book
Win Highest Chamber Unlocked 1 Time 1 Spell Book

4th Quest Rewards

  • 2 Restricted Section Books
  • 3 DADA Books
  • 500 Wizarding XP
  • 60 Gold
  • 30 Spell Energy
  • 1 Distinguished Scholar Title

Back to Hogwarts Event Bundles

Like most events, Back to Hogwarts features a free store pack plus 2 premium options. Are these bundles a good deal?

For 800 Gold, you get:

  • 5 Baruffio’s Brain Elixir
  • 10 Exstimulo Potions
  • 5 Tonics for Trace Detection
  • 30 Spell Energy

This is identical to the recent Brilliant Bundle, so I’m using the same logic.

A single Baruffio’s Brain Elixir costs 100 Gold in Diagon Alley. However, if you just need to buy the rare Ingredients, it’s a better deal to spend 20 Gold for 1 Dragon Claw and 12 Gold for 2 Toadstools, use Master Notes in the Cauldron, and then collect the Potion immediately for 62 Gold. So let’s put the value of Brain Elixirs at 94 Gold.

Thus 5 Brain Elixirs are worth 470 Gold.

A single Tonic for Trace Detection in Diagon Alley costs 60 Gold. However, you can also buy 4 for 220 Gold, so the individual value is 55 Gold.

Thus 5 Tonics are worth 275 Gold.

Normally I don’t recommend spending Gold on Exstimulo Potions or the Ingredients, because they’re relatively common. The other two Potions are worth 745 Gold, however, just 55 Gold short of the price of the bundle. If 30 Spell Energy plus 10 Exstimulo Potions is worth 55 Gold to you, then go ahead and buy it.

For 2100 Gold, you get:

  • 10 Strong Exstimulo Potions
  • 10 Potent Exstimulo Potions
  • 5 Wit-Sharpening Potions
  • 10 Silver Keys
  • 150 Energy

This is identical to the recent Bonus Assignment bundle, so I’m using the same logic.

Normally, I don’t advise buying Strong Exstimulo Potions or regular Exstimulo Potions because the Ingredients are fairly common. However, the Back to Hogwarts Event ends right before the Adversaries Event begins, so players might need to replenish their Potions.

Looking at just Ingredients, it’s 3 Gold each per Snowdrop, Bitterroot, and Re’em Blood, plus 12 Gold for Abraxan Hair, so 36 Gold per Strong Exstimulo Potion.

Thus 10 Strong Potions are worth 360 Gold.

A single Potent Exstimulo Potion in Diagon Alley costs 75 Gold. However, if you have all of the common Ingredients, it’s a better deal to buy 1 Unicorn Hair for 30 Gold, use Master Notes in the Cauldron, and then collect the Potion immediately for 41 Gold. So let’s put the value of Potent Exstimulo Potions at 71 Gold.

Thus 10 Potent Potions are worth 710 Gold.

10 Silver Keys cost 720 Gold.

I still don’t recommend spending Gold on Wit-Sharpening Potions. All of the Ingredients are common, AND unique to the Potion. (Players go through Ingredients for Exstimulo Potions quite quickly). Plus you can earn Wit-Sharpening Potions through Gifts.

Before Spell Energy, this bundle is worth 1790 Gold, not quite the price tag. However, if you’re a rural player with limited resources at home, this bundle might help you replenish your Potions and Spell Energy, plus your Silver Keys.

Final Thoughts on Back to Hogwarts

Overall, I enjoy the creative theme, and I’m excited to see rewards that match the difficulty of tasks. While not all players will be able to complete all tasks, the boosted Foundables are exciting enough (two Emergency-threat Foundables!) that all players can enjoy this event.

Darn, I have a busy work week next week, so I’m not sure I’ll finish either. I really like that this is something different though.

I did read in the HPWU forum that they reduced the portkey task in task 2 from 4 to 1. Although if you can’t open 4, I don’t know if 1 is much better.

As always, thanks for the guide!

I just opened a regular port key and got the platform 9 3/4 sign. I was expecting a special port key, but I guess not…

Apparently there aren’t any! Just regular portkeys should give you the sign.

Portkeys are normal, not special.

“Taking Hogwarts Express” 3/4 task for Expecto Patronum changed to “two masterful casts.”

The portkey thing was throwing me, and the one thing currently keeping me from progressing. Thanks to everyone who posted how it’s working.

Glad they changed the cast skill requirement. I get greats on Expecto Patronum fairly frequently, but it was very hit and miss today seeing Dementor guarded foundables.

Brita, there is a typo in one of your headings which should say “4th Quest Rewards” (but it says “2nd Quest Rewards” instead).

I really used to love this game. Between the soaring data usage and all the bugs that they never fix, just opening it now depresses me. I’ve posted about bugs at the forum so many times that have never even been replied to, it’s like they just don’t care. It’s been months since I could even complete the dailies, let alone any of the non-stop events. I can’t believe I actually spent my money on this game once upon a time. I’d have been better off flushing it down the toilet.
